An effort was made to have the convention meet ?n Charleston, but some of the members thought they caught the odor of the "nigger in the wood pile," and this proposition was voted down. At the meet ing last night 26 of the 40 counties were represented. Senator Tillman was here by virtue 01 nis poeiuuu as a member of the national committee. Col. R Tillman, member of the National Democratic Executive Committee. . / There was considerable discussion caused by the introduction of a resolution by Mr. Magill that no member be allowed to vote unless that mem ber had been regularly elected. That was supported by Mr. W. D. Evans and Mr. Blease. Col. Wharton and Mr. Altamont Moses opposed the mo tion. Senator Tillman said in reply to Mr. Moses that it is sometimes the case that members of the National Democratic Committee are represented by proxy. It was decided to Jet the members present, by proxy or otherwise, participate in the proceedings and in the votes. Mr. Blease introduced a resolution to the effect that the committee ad vise the convention to add a new section to the oath to be taken by candi dates in the State primary, so that they would be bound to support the platform of the National Democratic party. But he withdrew the resolution at the suggestion of Ool. W. D. Evans, who declared that it would be something like arrogance- for this committee, which now goes out of existence, to make any such suggestion to the convention. There was no further business and the committee adjourned. Under the constitution of the party the Democratic clubs meet to leorganiz^ on the last Saturday in April, the 2tiih this year. Austin, April 4.?The court of civil appeals, third district, has handed clown opinions in the cases of the Srate of Texas against the "Waters Pierce Oil company, on appeal from j cu: iucuennaa couuiy, auu mo ouiyycio Compress and Warehouse company, 3D appeal from Travis county, affirming the decisions of the lower courts and declaring the anti-tru9ta acts un3onetitutional. "Washington, April 4?The friends of the bill to confer Statehood on Arizona, Oklahoma and New Mexico were claiming today that they had 112 Republican votes in the House pledged to support that measure, of which number from forty to seventy would withstand all pressure. The assertion made by the House leaders hat those territories would send Democratic Senators to Congress if admitted as States they denounce as groundless anj3 erroneous. Oa the contrary, they say, the Republicans i&ve New Mexico and Oklahoma safe md would have more than a fighting sbance in Arizona if Statehood were ;onferred on that Territory by a Republican Congress.
