LEPEOSY 1ST TEE TJ. S.
Not Ore Cass Reported from
South Carolina.
Washington, March 24 ?The Secretary
of the Treasury today sent tc
the Senate a report of the commis
sion of medical officers of the marine
hospital service, appointed to investigate
the origin and prevalence ci
leprosy in the United States. The

in the United States, distributed bj
States as follows:
Alabama,. 1: California, 24: Florida,
24; Georgia, 1; IlliDoia, 5; Iowa.
1: Louisiana, 155; Maryland, 1, Mass
achusetts, 2; Minnesota, 20; Missouri,
5; Montana, 1; Nevada, 1; New
York, 7; North Dakota, 18; Oregon.
1: Pennsylvania, 1; South Dakota, 1;
Texas, 3; Wisconsin, 3.
Of the total number 176 are males
102 females; 145 American born, 12C
foreign born and the remainder uncertain.
It is stated that 186 of the cases
were contracted in the United States,
but the opinion is expressed by the
commission tbat this number is too
large and that some of these cases
were brought from abroach
Summarizing the committee say
that the number of cases is smaller
than is generally believed. They also
say that leprosy is conveyed from one
nersnn to another in the United
ir - - - - - States,
such conveyance being most
markably noticeable in the States on
the Southern coast; that a large majority
of the cases im the United
States (33 per cent.) are at large;
that at present only 72 of the cases
are isolated and provided for by the
States or cities in which they are located,
and that many of those now at
large, if not all, would be willing to
be cared for if the proper lepresoria
existed for their treatment and comfort
The comm.ssion recommends
the establisment of a reteat for lepers,
and expresses the opinion that it
should be in the arid Southwest, or
in a similar region further north, or
on an island in the Gulf of Mexico
or on the Pacific coast.
Of the 155 cases reported from
Louisiana. 101 are in New Orleans
county and 37 in the leper home at
Iberville. Of the 7 cases in New
York, 4 are in King's county and 3
in New York county. The commission
expresses the opinion that the
figures given do not represent the total
number of lepers in the country
because they say that the loathsome
character of the disease causes persons
affected to conceal it as long as
possible. They also express the
opinion that it is most frequently
contracted by inhaling dust where
lepers h3ve been located.
Saved Many a Tine.
Don't neglect coughs and colds
even if it is spring. Such cases
often result seriously at this season
just because people are careless. A
dose of One Minute Cough Cure will
remove all danger. Absolutely safe.
Acts at once. Sure cure for coughs,
colds, croup, grip, bronchitis, and
other throat and lung troubles "I
have used One Minute Cough Cure
several years.'' says Postmaster C.

very best cough medicine on the
market. It has saved me many a
severe spell of sickness and I warmly
recommend it " The children's favorite.

It is astonishing bow the public
locks upon the newspaper as a free
horee to be ridden to death. People
will pay money for a band, for lights,

and buy thousands of dodgers, pa^
boys to deliver them, pay performers
in the entertainment, if they are professional?,
or pay some manager tc
get up the affair and give him a large

the bills?in fact, pay for everything
except that which is most valuable tc
them, to wit, newspaper advertising

why should not the newspapers

its rent, the billboard man charges i
for the use of his billboards, the lithographers
