??^? The Lexington Dispatch. Wednesday, March 26,1802. Crumpacker's Crime. Special to the News and Courier. Washington, March 20?Southern Democrats are not at ail well pleased with what Mr. Bryan has had to tay in connection with the Crumpacker resolution for the investigation of ? ci IL TT: ? election laws in tne ooum. ?jub statement that it is not so objectionable after all, it is claimed, shows that he is not in the least conversant with the meaning and intent of the resolutions, or with conditions in the n .ii. aouin. Representative Finley, referring to Mr. Bryan's position, said todaj: ikIf the interview credited to Mr. Bryan be true, all I have to say is that Democrats in Congress need no further advice or remarks from Mr. Bryan on the subject. He is obviously not conversant with Southern conditions and I had hoped that he was too wise a man to talk about a matter about which he has shown that he knows so little. I am not at all surprised that the Crumpacker resolu tion will be pushed through the House, I felt the danger of it from the beginning. The Republicans will doubtless succeed in passing it through the House, but the Democrats will put up such a fight as to thoroughly air the sectional spirit which is back of the whole scheme. To me the appointing of a committee to investigate election laws in the South is an outrageous attack, not * only upon the honesty and integrity of every Southern Congressman, but upon the Southern people. The -rM-i'mc mnvciN in the Rnheme are bit ter haters of the South and are making this fight for nothing in the world but to vent their spleen against the Southern people. The reason the party leaders have allowed the measure to come up is not because they approve of its provisions. Congressional elections are coming off this summer and they hope by passing this resolution to get a few more votes in Ohio, Indiana and some of the other border States. Had it not been for this fact there are a sufiicient number of leaders in the Republican delegation opposed to it to have killed the resolution outright. Representative Hay, chairman of the Democratic caucus, exoressed the opinion that the suggestion of Mr. Bryan in regard to the Crumpacker resolution was not at all reasonable and, of course, would not be adopted. "We will hold a caucus at an early date," he said, "and outline our fight. I do not expect that we will be able to defeat the resolution, but that will # odIj serve to add to the intensity of the fight we shall put up." La Grippe Quickly Cured. "In the winter of 1898 and 1S99 I was taken down with a severe attack of what is called La Grippe," says F. L. Hewett, a prominent druggist of Winfield, III. "The only medicine I used was two bottles of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. It broke up the cold and stopped the coughing like magic, and I have never since been troubled with Grippe." Chamberlains Cough Remedy can always be depended upon to break up a severe cold and ward off any threatened attack of pneumonia. It is pleasant to take, too, which makes it the most popular preparations in use for these ailments. For sale by J. E. Kaufcnann. Traveled as Potatoes. Chicago, March II.?Billed as a sack of choice potatoes a young man has arrivend in Chicago from Kansas City, tied up in a sack. For three days and a half he had been confined in a sack, and duriDg that time he had traveled close to 700 miles in a freight car. The sack which covered him was inclosed in an open fruit case. The traveler, who is Martin Kladsdigger, a machinst of Kansas City, was nearly famished i t- _?i. t u:? ? When released Klansj digger was nearly blinded by the ! dust which had crept into the sack, | and his throat and mouth were so | parched that he could hardly speak, his little cask of water having been spilled after he had been on his j journey only a day. For nearly three days he had been without water, and he stated, when he was able to talk, that had it not rained Wednesday he would certainly have died of thirst, j During most $r the storm the car in | which he was packed was side-track- | j ed out in some small country town, . ? The greatest daDger from colds and la prince is their resulting in o ri pneumonia. If reasonable care is j used, however, and Chamberlain's Cough Remedy taken, all danger will be avoided. Among the tens of thousands who have used this remedy for these diseases, we ha,e yet to learn of a single case haviDg resulted in pneumonia, which shows conclusively that it is a certain preventive of that dangerous malady. It will cure a cold or an attack of la grippe in less 'time than any other treatment. It is pleasant and safe to take. For sale bv J. F. Kaufmanr. j " 1 ?
