Lexington Methodist Sunday School
enjoyed a distribution of presents
last Sunday. This distribution was
to have taken place on December

Who Is He? A
few days ago Clerk of Court
George received a letter from Dr. A.
C. Julian, of Lake City, Fia., saying
that there had beeD a statement
made by one Hampton, alias L. S.
Price, alias L. S. Johnson, a negro,
to the effect that he had killed a
railroad man and wounded several
others in a difficulty, which occurred
at Lewiedale, S. C, about New Year
night, 1887. He made this confession
when on the scaffold to pay the
penalty of murdering two negro
women. He claimed to have lived
on Dr. Folk's place in Newberry
county and later at Ridge Spring.

Death cf Mrs. Daniel Price.
Miley Taylor was born Oct. 6,1825,
and died Jan. 2, 1902, aged 76 year3,
2 months and 26 days. She was
married to Daniel Price. This union
was blessed with 9 sons, 20 grandLM

and 1 great grand-child preceded
her to the spirit world. She
was baptised in infancy, and early in
life became a confirmed member cf
the Lutheran church, in which she

bravery. She leaves to mourn
her departure 3 sons, 18 grand-children.

Obituaries.
Mmily Adel Roberts was bcrn
12th October, 1900, and died the
17th December, 1901. In the death
of this little child the cradle has
been left vacant, being the second
time in the last few years. Oh! how
sad and gloomy is the home, left
without a baby. God bless the
parents and all situated thus.

Wade Dalion, son of James Oswalt
and wife Sedecia, was born Decern
I ber 3rd, 1889, and died December
21st, 1901, aged 12 years and 18
days. He was given to God in infancy
by the rite of baptism. He
leaves to mourn his departure a
father and mother, 4 brothers and
3 sisters. One sister having preceded
him to the spirit land. Peace to
his ashes and rest to his soul. The
funeral services were conducted by
Rev. W. K. Roof. R.
Mary Ann Price, wife of Jacob
Price, departed this life December
23, 1901, age about 78 years. She
was married to Jacob Price April 6.
1846. Tais union was blessed with
9 children, 4 sons and 5 daughters,

children, 1 son and 2 daughters
and 8 grand children preceded her
to the spirit land. She was baptised
in infancy and later in life ratified
her baptismal vow by joining the
church in which she lived a faithful
member until death. She reached
an advanced old age and often expressed
her faith in God, saying that
it was through his mercy that she
was permitted to live so long a time.
Another mother in Israel has left us
to fight the battle of life. "There is
therefore a rest to the people of God."
Peace to her ashes and rest to her
soul. The funeral services were conducted
by her pastor, Rev. W. H.
Roof, after which her body was laid
to rest in the family burying ground
near Priceville, Lexington county,
S. C. R.

Mortally Wounded.
Columbia State, 8th inst.
Just across the Congaree river in
Lexington county at the Huffman
quarry on Monday morning about 10
o'clock a negro named Pompey
Mickins was shot by another negro
named Robert Burrel. One of the
bullets struck Mickins in the back
and the other hit him in the knee.
Burrell fled across the Columbia,
Newberry and Laurens bridge in the
direction of this city and has not
been captured so far as any one
knows.
Those in the quarry say that Mickins
had buv a short time before come
to the quarry and that there were no
words between the men before the
shooting. They say that Burrell
simply walked up to Alickins and
tired before any one could interfere.
Mickin? was still alive yesterday
afternoon, but it is said there is absolutely
no hope for bis recovery, the
attending physician having pronounced
the wound mortal when he
first saw the victim. Mickins lives
on the Lexington side of the river.

Big Loss by Fire.
| We learn that Col. D. T. Birr,
j who lives in the neighborhood of
I Closer Shiloh Methodist church, had
the misfortune to lose bis barn and
contents by fire on the morning of
Monday, January tub, by a fire of e
unknown origin. The fire was discovered
at about 2 o'clock in the >
morning and had made such head- j|
way that it was impossible to save
the barn and its contents. The barn
was a large one and was conveniently 1
arranged with many modern conven- ?
iences and contained a youDg mare, I
a mule, two head of cattle, a lot of o
other stock, a large quantity of food
and numerous other things of intrinsic
value, all of which were a j
total loss to Mr. Barr, as he carried
no insurance.
The origin of the fire is Dot knowD, r
but must have either started from
rats and matches, or wa9 the work of
an incendiary, and the loss is quite a
heavy one to Mr. Barr.

Death of Mi3s Mamie Barrett.
Miss Mamie, daughter of Mr. F.
A. Barrett, died at the home of her
father in this place, last Saturday
night about 10 o'clock, after a long "
and painful illness in the 22nd year
of her age. She was a young lady
of rare beauty of character, sweet
disposition and amiable manners, i
She was greatly beloved by a large '
circle of friends with whom she was
very popular. Her remains were
