After an illness ex-ending through several years, Mr. D*-derick George who re-ided near this p'ace calmnly and peacefully died at his home last Saturday. Mr. George was one of our ? ' ? J ? He was a man of the strictest integrity, was of a social and genial disposition, these characteristics won for him a large circle of friends. He was a gallant Confederate soldier and served with conspicious bravery from the beginning to the end of hostilities. At the time of his enlistment only two other citizens of this county joined the company with which he was connected, they being Dr. C. E. Leaphart and Mr. Fred Harman. He was about 56 years of age and leaves a wife and eleven children. His funeral services were conducted at his home Sunday morning in the presence 01 between 400 and 500 people the R9V. W. D. Quick officiating. ThefuDeral procession was from ? tc 1 mile in length. The interment was in the family burying ground near the residence of his brother Mr. Erby J. George. Beside his immediate family, Mr. George leaves a large family connection who, together with his friends and acquaintances mourn with those who mourn. We are of the opinion that quite a number of the fair sex have found this out as we frequently noticed sly glances that beamed with admiration cast toward him, all of which he stood with Spa rtan like heroism determined to see the rosy cheeked girls of the other sectione of the county before launching upon the sea of matrimony. Lexington Bar. was shot and probably fatally injured by Mr. C. W. Sollee, a prominent merchant at Batesburg. The shooting occurred on Mr. Sollee's plantation in Saluda county, a short distance across the line aod was the result of a misun- i derstanding between the two parties. Mr. Sollee and a negro tenant of his in q ^icinnfa nrrav a UKUttUiO 1UVUHCU IU a w . i? division of the crops and Mr. Asbill had beec retained to look after the interest of the negro and was on his way to consult his client when he met Mr. Sollee in the road where tlje shooting occurred. The weapon used was a 44 calibre and Mr. Asbill was shot in the back, the ball paseing | through the left lung and has net J been found He is in a critical condition, but hopes are entertained for ! his recovery. Mr. Soliee was given I a preliminary hearing before Magistrate C. C. Wise, and was admitted to bail in the sum of $500.
