The Lexington Dispatch Q. M. HARM AN. Editor and Publisher. LEXINGTON. S. C.. WEDNESDAY. SEPTEMBER 11.1901. WHERE EARTH AND SKY MEET. Our Correspondent is Smitten With the Rosy Cheeks of Mountain Lasses. To the Editor of the Dispatch: HaviDg spei t a full round week at Glenn Spring?, and as time for return -?- 1 ur.nrftD/'titlP I?lg UULLIU was jrj; iiij on Monday luomiog, the 26ib, I departed for A&beville, N C,to spend a few days. Ou reaching Spartanburg, we learned that the Southern's train wss off the track between Hendersonville aDd Saluda aDd would be five hours late. This was discouraging as it would delay our train for Asheville. After a considerable wait we were off toward the mountains whose lofty peaks soon began to mark their smokey, b'ue outlines against the clouded sky. We watched inffcreet and anxietv as We shifted ourselves from side to side of the train to keep the best view, as it wouDd its way up around the mcun tains. After awhile we reached TryoD, which is just over the line of South and North Carolina. "While waiting here for a southbound train we were besieged by a great squad of boys and men with hundreds of little baskets of grapes. We were told that this is their daily occupation, and they certainly sell a lot of them. Tko ViPftlfh rf the country mas and the rosy blush of the mountain air on the Tryon girls' cheeks, made us feel as though we had gone far enough, but the distant whistle of the incoming train re-echoeing down the mountain valleys announced the continuance of our journey, and soon we were speeding away up the mountains. This was the dreaded part of our journey. Heavy iaiDS had washed down the mountain sides and cut great ditches in the embankments of the roadbed, and angry waters came rushing and roaring over rocks and cliffs down the valleys. Our engineer kept a sharp lookout and dragged us up the mountain with the greatest care, but we held our breath in perfect awe when we, looked the mountain three or four hundred feet and beheld the rugged rocks below. We considered ourselves in imminent danger of a landslide at any moment, and as we rounded the sharp curves we imagined we could almost feel the roadbed giving way beneath us. We knew if this should occur we would go tumbling down the angry steep whose rugged, rocky sides rise almost perpendicular from one to five hundred feet up to the railroad. Beyond Tryon an extra eDgine came to our assistance aDd soon dragged us out on the great mountain, plateau at Hendersonville. Now we felt relieved, and not loDg after we landed in Asheville. It was raining, the street cars were cff the track and the hackmen took us for "Yankees" and wanted fifty cents to carry us anywhere. "We soon found a boarding house and put up for the remainder of the night. It rained all night and next morning it was still rainiDg, but we could not be content to sit and wait for it to stop iairing. We mutt see Asbeville. We walked over the principal streets and even crossed over the famous French Broad river. We virtually "took in the towD," walking where we could aDd ridicg where we could cot walk. Ashevilie is situated on a hill in a mountain valley. I* is surrounded by lofty peaks that rise up like the pyramids of Egypt. It has street car linep, electric lights and all the modern convenience of an up-to date city. Here on the public fquare stands the great Vance monument, surrounded bv flowers and a beautiful green lawn. Nearby is a msgDificent aBd elegantly furnished public library. All the business buildirgs 8ie strictly up-todate and the residences are (f the most modern style and finest architecture. There is no sameness about any of them. EventhiDg about Asheville shows that it is backed up by great wealth. But we were told that the principal part of it is Northern capital. Manv cf the fine bouses --r V and places of business are owned by Northern men and rented by local residents. If Northern visitors and their money were withdrawn Asbeville would be left desolate. There are but few manufacturing interests in the place, snd it is surrounded by what we would call a farming country. Principally corn and vegetables are raised and some fruits are grown. No cotton is produced. I am told 4V>nvo qro formorc fnrfr nr fiff.V 1 lUCIb v ai v au* luv? u * v* vj ?j . years old who have never seen a stalk of cotton, and perhaps a bale of home raised cotton has never been marketed in Asheville. Board is high in Asheville, aDd so is everything else. We saw some little knotty melons like we feed to hogs that sold for ten cents each. Beefsteak sells from twenty-five to tbirty-five cents per pound. All groceries are high. Retail grocers do a good business, but customers carry out but very little. Most of their business is city trade. Orders are given by 'phone and the goods sent out by porters. This is the custom _ of Norther^ residents and visitors. They have plenty of money and I ill lill have murd: TTT L 1 t 1 we are not nere iui (jichbuic auu and if honest goods and honest prices Columbia, meet with your approval, here, the price is low, come and buy or customers purchasing SlO.Otl 2 cases 3G-inch bleach, no limit, per yard, 5 < 5 bales 36-inch best Sea Island, per yard. 4 c< 10 bales best buckskin chevoits, per yard 5 c 1 case light colored calico, per jard. cent* 25 dozan Lisle finish lace hose, per pair, 10 < A big job lawns, per yard, 3J cents. 5 pieces It ] sheeting 2J yards wide, per yarc 5 pieces 10} peperell sheeting, the best goods 3 bales drilled jeans, per yard, 5 cents. Come eve: B J1711 Main April 10. 1901. never ask the price of anything if the quality is satisfactory. This accounts ^ for high prices. j We should have liked to visit seve- j eral of the highest mountain peaks, but time would net permit. We had to content ourselves with a fine car ride to Overlook Park on Sunset mountain. Asht ville cars connected us with Asheville aud Craggy Mountain cars at Gulf Club statiou at the foot of Sunset mountain, and we be gan the climb at an average of two hundred and thirty feet to the mile. Glimpses of distant mountain peaks can be bad through the forests as one rides along. At the end of about a mile our car was reversed and we were switched back to another track. Now we spin around the mountain for ten minutes to a rock quarry where rocks are being crushed and distributed over the car line. Here the whole panorama of the French Broad river bursts into view, ice peak of Pisgah looms up at a distance of eighteen miles with Rat mountain on the left and the Balsam range on the right. Here, too, the city meets our view, with the Battery Park hotel showing its beautiful roofs and gables. For the next two thousand feet a lovely landscape is constantly in full view. Soon the green slopes of Overlook Park are seen on the left and now we see the distant line of the Blue Ridge divid ing the waters between the Atlantic and Mississippi valley. Away out fo the light, in the midst of forests and streams, lies the Yanderbilt estate, while at the foot of this peak six hundred feet below and extending for forty miles to Brevard, lie almost innumerable little mountain farms and cottages. Now we alight from the car and step into the pavilion at the park on the top of this mountain peak. Here we are given glasses and we view the city of Asheville four and one half miles away, and see the chickens in the yards and the cattle in the meadows. We bring Yauderbilt's mansion nearby and view it and gaze upon all the mountains and valleys a burdred miles away, from the liver's sources in the Saludas to the great Smokey Range gap at Hot Sprfngs. Only those who have witnessed such magnificent ecenery can form any idea of its wonderful beauty. Up hf re, where it is so cool that even on the hottest summer day one has to button up his coat and turn up the collar to be comfortable, there is a splendid pavilion, a plank walk seven hundred feet long, over a hundred rustic seats and plenty of refreshments. It is a wonderful place to go to ccol c ff, and those who go to ? ? A8beu'l<? and miss going up on ounset mountain certainly misses cne of the greatest pleasures of the trip. The Asheville and Crappy Mountain Street Railway will continue this line to Craggy mountain peak, twentyfive miles away. When this is done, Asheville can boast of the longest mountain electiie railway aDd some cf the grandest mountain sceDery in the world. We wanted to visit Mr. Vanderbilt at Biltmore, but the weather was so bad, and as he did not know cf our intended visit, we feared be might not be prepared to entertain us, so we postponed this visit and came home.
