The Lexington Dispatch G. M. HARM AN. Editor and Publisher. LEXINGTON. S. C.. WEDNESDAY. .TUNE 12. 1901. Railroad Wreck in Atlanta. Atlanta, Ga., June 4 ?A switch en gine in the yard3 of the Southern Railway shops, near the city limits, dashed into a passenger train as it was passing today, killing three passengers and injuring sixteeD, three of them, it is feared, fatally. Just beyond the Southern shops are the coal chutes aod all about these are side tracks. On one of these side tracts and only a few feet from the main track an eugine. was standing that had ouly a short while before been abandoned by its engineer and fireman. As the train was passing the junction of this side tract the switch engine suddenly dashed backward into the moving train. The first class day coach was thrown over on its side and partly demolished, the Pullman car "Arcturus" was thrown from the track and one * .A 2UO. smascea into &.muuug wwu, while the tracks were knocked from under the combination smoker and passenger coach. Those killed were in the day coach. Physicians and railroad officials were quickly on the scene; some of the injured were taken to the hospitals and the dead brought to Atlanta. Soon after the wreck G. B Dunton, an employee of the Southern Kailroad, was arrested, charged with disorderly conduct. This charge was made only that DuLtrn might be held. He was really arrested on suspicion of having run the wild en gine into the swiftly moving passenger train. Dunton denies that he had anything to do with the wreck and says he was not on the engine. The Southern officials claim that he was seen to get on the engine, and the say further that he had no business there, as he is a yard conductor. Dunton has several gashes in his head, which he admits receiving in they wreck, but be maintains that he was not on the engine. Later?Dunton has been bound ever without bail to the Superior Court on the charge of murder. Tbe evidence heard at the preliminary trial tended to show that Dunton was on the switch engine which ran into the passeDger train. A Good Cough Medicine. It speaks well for Chamberlain's Cough Remedy when druggists use it in their own families in preference to any other. "I have sold Cnamberlain's Cough Remedy for the past five years with complete satisfaction to myself and customers," says Druggist J. Goldsmith, Van EtteD, N Y. *'I have always used it in my own family both for ordinary coughs and colds and for tbe cough following la grip, and find it very efficacious." For aale by J. E Kaufmaun. Saved the Situation. A story is told of a certain siDger which shows that he possessed rov only musical ability but admirable presence of mind. On the occasion of his first appearance his voice was somewhat harsh, and his vocal efforts were greeted with hisses from the disappointed audience. Without appearing to be in the least moved by this unpleasant reception, the young artist looked calmly down at the crowd of listeners and said. "Gentlemen, it is a pity to hear you whistle so badh; allow me to give you a lesson." Upon that he began to whistle in a most exquisite manner the varied airs of an opera which was very pop ular at the time. At this unexpected turn of effaiis silence and then prolonged applause succeeded to the hissing' and from that time on whether he sang or whistled. There was no more hissing. Wanted. Tillman and McLaurin Jokes. Augusta Evening Herald. Senator McLiutin thinks that Sen- , ator Tillman has "spiled" since be went to Washington. This recalls the campaign story Tillman used to tell. That was the time the present Senator would not accept the office, but was on the stump pro bono publico. He complained to the farmers that the representatives whom they sent to Columbia were not faithful to the trusts resposed in them. He said: "They put me in mind of the an swer the boy made to the gentleman in my county. The gentleman came across a Email lad who was sitting by a stream fishing. The boy had caught three or four little fish." "'What luck, my boj?' " 'Fair.1 '"What kind of fish are they.' " 'Baptist fish, sir.' "'Why do you call them Baptist fish, my bo}?. "'They'spile'so soon after they come out of the water, sir.1 "That is the way with your farmer representatives,v exclaimed the speaker. "They are all right at first, but they 'spile' so soon as they cross the Congaree river and get into Columbia." A McLuurinite is telling a story in South Carolina illustrative, he says, of the status there. He proclaims it an old story?one of Loo Livingston's?but many of us have never heard it before. "Two farmers, Jones and Smith, own adjoining plantations and were very warm friends. But the Jones women fell out with the Smith women and foon Jones and Smith were enemies. "One day JoDee went hunting. He lost his way in the swamp. Night caught him there. Realizing that, he began to hello for help. "Smith, way upon high land, heard the cry of distress. He got him a long pole, and on the end of it tied a blazing torch of lightwood. "Then Smith cried out 'Hallo! you who have lost your waj! you come right to this light. You will be safe.' " 'All right,' cried the lost man. "Then, a moment afterward he stopped. 'Hold on a minute,' he cried, 'who are you that holds tho light?' "Smithl' "'Then go to h?1! I'll stay where I am.' "That," says the McLaurinite, "is the way with many in Carolina. You may show the true light?the real path to the light?but it depends upon who holds it more than upon the truth and right and justice it illustrates."
