On Tbuisday morniDg the litt'e
son of Cjmptroller General Derbam
developed a case of smallpox. The
Comptroller had brought the lad to
the city with him a few days before.
On "Wednetcl-ry the hearing before
the railroad board of assessors took
place in the office of the comptroller,
who is.a member of the board. Mr.
Derham kept the led sitting on his
knee most of the day, while he listened
to the railroad officials and attorneys.
The next morning he was shocked
when he found the lad broken out
with smallpox Steps were at once
taken to provide for the isolation of
Mr. Derham and the boy and the
best medical treatment for the latter.
At oresent both are carefully quaran
tined, but well quartered in the outbkirts
of the city. The physician in |
attendance said yesterday the chances
were that the case would be a mild
one.
There was quite a rush amoDg the .
railroad officials and others who visited
the comptroller's office Wednesday
to get fresh vaccinations. It is 1
not known where the lad could have ^
come in contact with the disease. 1

Trains Came This Way.
The breaks over the Catawba on
the Southern railway and Seaboard
Air Line have not yet been repaired
and the trains to and from Atlanta i
are still passing thiough Columbia.
The high water continues and no end
of dan ages is being done to low land
crop3 all along the river courses. The
CoDgaree began falling slowly yesterday
and it is believed that the
worst of the flood is over. No other
serious results were reported yesterbay.
County Exhibits.
A meeting of the expostion commission
has been called to meet in
Columbia, June 9 It is expected
then that arrangements to receive
county exhibits will be made. It is
likely that some one who is familiar
with such things will be able to secure
such exhibits.

Disastrous Storm on Lakes.

special to The Tribune from Tawas
City says: A terrific northeaster
nrevailed all dav and last nicht. The

steamer Baltimore, coal laden, broke
in two and sank off Au Sable this
morning before daylight. Thirteen
were drowned including a woman
and boy.
The tug Columbia of Detroit with
a government steam dredge and two
loaded lighters for the Soo was
caught in the storm. The lighters
and dredge were lost, parting their
six inch cable. The crew of six men
is missing. Whil9 searching today
for her tow the Columbia picked up
two men from the Baltimore on a
raft. They were almost dead and
were taken to east Tawas. Another
man was on the rdf<", but was lost
despite the effects to save him.

Her crew left lnr Thursday. The
Tawas life saving crew made a trip
to her at midnight and rowed 18

mechiuery they carried and
the six men are still missing. The
wind is now going down. (
