WEDNESDAY. MAY 29. 1901. 3
The outcome cf t le joint debate 3
between Senators Tillman and Mc- ^
Laurin at Gaffoey City last Satur- g
day, was a surprise to the friends of 3
nnntlnman on.l 1 o f V) o CCTISfltion

of the hour. Like u clap of thunder 3
from ft clear sky the resignation of 3
both as United Stales Senators was 3
flashed throughout the length and 3
breadth of the land. This step was
brought about by each taunting '!
the other. 3
Iq our judgment this exhibition of
ill advised action is pure childishness 3
from which neither can gain any ^
credit. This incident give3 the enemies
of both Senators an opportunity
which they have been waiting for for
some.time and they doubtless will
* ' ' Q
be quick to seize it to elect a man 3
; who has been all along closely idenn
ev* An f Kofh ! 3
uucu nivu lucii uouicuvi auvj wv.- need
a good spanking at tbe hands
\ of the voters, and both will no doubt
receive it at the proper time. 3
Senator McLaurin has written a
letter protesting against a campaign 3
- in August on account of his physi- g
cal condition and Senator Tillman
has had one published making ex- 3
CU868 for precipitating a campaign
in this "off" year, and thus the matter j*
rest at present with the resignation
of both in the hands of the Governor. 31
Col. Wilie Jones ba3 publicly and 31
positively announced his candidacy
for United States Senator from South 3!
Carolina. This announcement places g,
his friends in a better position 'to
work for his nomination than they 31
have heretofore occupied. 31
Col. Jones is unquestionably the g,
strongest man that has yet entered 3;
the race and bis friends all over the 31
State intend to see to it that he is
Qi
successful in the race. Successful in
his public life, clean in his piivate 3
relations and free from the petty
jealouses and scandals that have char- 3!
acterized the political course of many ^
of the statesmen of the present time,
the voters of the State of every shade
" of political faith can conscientiously 31
support him in the primary which is
to be held sometime in the future,
and thus place 8 gentleman in a p?oninent
public position who will uphold T
the honor and dignity of t'le State
in a statesmanlike manner.

The Jersey City Journal of May J

B How To
? 2
Gain Flesh ?
a
Persons have been known to 2
gain a pound a day by taking z
an ounce of SCOTT'S EMUL- \
SIGN. It is strange, but it often
happens. 2
? Somehow the ounce produces
the pound; it seems to start the * 2
digestive machinery going properly,
so that the patient is able 2
to digest and absorb his ordinary 2
food, which he could not do be- 9
fore, and that is the way the gain
is made. 2!

acted as bridesmaids: 2;
Miss Hattie Hawes, sister of the
groom and Miss Effie Riley. The ^
best man was the groom's brother, 9!
Mr. S. P. Hawes.
The bride was accompained by her
sister Miss Ollie Geiger. After the .>
ceremony was performed a bountiful
supper was served and was certainly
enjoyed by all present. 9
