The Lexington Dispatch (x. M. HARMAN. Editor and Publisher. "IjexingtonTsTc. . WEDNESDAY. MAY ?. 1901. THE POT OF GOLD. UA ncA/1 f A a UO^Vt kV U V Of gold was buried where The radiant rainbow touched the ground, And ott I helped him hunt around To find the treasure there. Bat that was long ago. In childhood's careless days. 'Tis dead, that loud belief of old: We seek no bur.'e 1 pots of gold And walk in wordly ways. Yet where the people surged I saw bim push his way { V To bet his money on the race. I saw him with an ashen face 1 Trudge home that luckless day. At rainbows' ends we sought In vain for hidden fold; Ah, he and I were children then, Now he and I are b 5th men And wiser than of old! An Explanation. [ Continued from Last Week.] kindness of the Executive Com. to denounce National psrty and I knew that was useless. I found a great many who gaye me their wishes but 1 I could see and they would say they saw no hope of a break now. To some I expressed myself very freely arid talked of the great future and j its religious and political issues. I : * was offered several times by friends to bear my expenses which I declined in every case. Till the meeting at n Lewiedale I feared the breach would be greater than I desired but I saw J after that that I would fully achieve - all I desired. I never electioneered or courted support. I preferred 0 men's confidence to their support. Nor do I believe the President is offering to buy Southerners by offices, nor do I believe the ones are going to receive the mean sale of principle. We desire to support a Christian statesman in his effort to assist the 0l South to break the shackles of threequarters of a century. Heretofore such a course by a Republican President would have borne no fruit. But r, 5 J through flood and flame the South ; 3 ] has followed her delusion till thous- ! ands of them now see the folly of fight- j 3] ing progress, science and civilization 2o any longer. "We don't care loDger to j fight Christianity nor enlist longer un- qe der the banner that meets with eternal defeat- We don't desire to 0 build around the Anglo-Saxon a ! Chinese wall, nor do we inter.d that I mankind shall be forever enslaved by i _ the conditions of the middle ages. ! We by our persistent efforts are try- j iDg to force a clais of citizens on the | North more daDgercus than lb9 Ne- j gro and one they will not accept. ; The last election was an eye opener j to the Southerner It has broken j = many shackles and set at liberty ! 0E many captive souls. Our couutry is co getting ready for greater issues. The ^ri time never was before when a man could do what I did last summer. ; tD On more than one occasion I made j Bevcral Republican addresses by per- j w mission of Democrats, and at Demo- j ar cratic meetings, and in a programme j 8C made by them and for them, and al- j ^ lowed to run in a primary and have j returns fairly counted. Wonderful j 13 change in the right direction for free j er speech and free discussion. , ! Wi I am an American in hope and de- *u sire. My father was a large slave- ^ holder as you know and against that j ^ I could have no natural aversion. He j and my family have been life long members of a Democratic family. I have been a member of your Legislature and elected by you as such and ar it has only by the severest struggles ^1 that I have been compelled to leave D; I . the home of my childhood and A., early manhood. I had hoped the Reform revolution here in 1890 and ^ on would develop some progress but 83 it has failed to meet the expectations eq of its friends and reform in that* di- eq rection is the merest deception except ca in one particular; it has developed a tb far greater degree of free speech and to free thought. To these two blessings ce of the Anglo-Saxons for years the peo- at pie here have been strangers and aliens th but we now see such a dawD. The g? Reform party here has firmly set itself h? up as the supporter of Bryanismand > in that to us is very far from what our SE people really want if they knew what I as Bryanism really meant at the North, j m There it was an appeal to socialism, j anarchy, sectionalism, populism aod class hatred and was a mixed medly of heresy and adulterations of every ; kind. He was a brilliant writer and ! ^l talker and was the very man to hide *ai deformity and defend viliiany in his public orations aud the light man to muster every power and array every , be force of my poor deluded fellow citi- a*zens in this great struggle in 1900 of ! 1Di Anglo-SaxoDy against foreign inno- j vation aDd Asiatic stagnation. He 10 coud do for our last struggle in 1900 eri what our President Jefierson iOavis : vv could do in 1865, preserve order and | cheer desponding, hopeless veterans ; 8U for the final clash of anus. He has [ done for Democracy what our Presi- j dent Davis did for the Confederacy; J exhausted its resources, depleted its raDk?. discouraged its faithful defenders till beyond the hope or power of ever again fighting the American ! ^ civilization or warriDg against the j inj g6nius of its future. A lawyer named Simp son. who hailed from St. Joseph, was arguing a motion for a new trial, during the course of which be was particularly scathing in hi3 criticism of the court's rulings. Finally his honor became a bit impatient and said: ' For goodness' sake, Mr. Simpsor, please give the court credit for a little sense anyway!'
