Obituary.

blooming and exhaling their sweetest
perfume, a reverent and sorrowful assembly
stood in the presence of a
snowy white casket that contained a

held the angel spiiit of the innocent
and joyful Catherine Ann, i.-.fant
daughter of H. Walter and Minnie
Hendrix, who was born December 3.
1800 and died March 30, 1001. With
Easter so mar at hand, and so full of
the suggestions of the resurrection,
immortality and heaven, the calm,
sweet lovely face of the dead child,
as well as the beautiful flowers ripen
the casket, seemed to voice the consoling
truth of Christ, "The maid is
not dead but eleepeth."
The funeral services were conduced
bv the Itevs. J. G. Graichen and 1
W. D Quick in Providence Evangelical
Lutheran church, Lexington, S.
C. The former preached the sermon
based upon St. Mark s: 111, "And he
took them in his arms, put his hands
upon them and blessed them."'
Sorrowing parents and friends as
they gathered around the little grave
accepted the Easter hope.

to which the heavenly
Father, the blessed Christ, the shining
throng of angels and the precious
child all beckon thee. Beyond the

FIRE IN BATESBURG.
Ginning and Planing Mill Destroyed.
Loss $4,000: No Insurance.
Batesburg, April 11.?The Batesburg
ginning and planing outfit was
destroyed by tire this afternoon. The
entire Winsbip improved plant and
plaiing and other expensive machinery
was burned. Nothing of the
eutire lot was saved. The fire caught,
from the smokestack and in five minutes
enveloped the buildings beyond
all power to control. Loss 84.000 no
insurance.

China's financial resources has reached
the coDclusior, bases upon what
information is obtainable, that three
hondred million dollars in gold can

learn that other Chinese
resources for indemnities are available.
The ministers opeuly express their
desire that the foreign troops leave
Pekin. They are seemingly as anxious
for the departure as were the beseiged
ministers anxious for the arrival
of the troops.

Embarrassing Action in Cuba.
HiVerna, April 12 ?The Cuban
constitutional convention placed itself
upon record today against the Piatt
amendment, by a vote of 13 to 10 on
a resolution that the convention
should declare itself opposed to tho
amendment on account of the terms
of some of the clauses aud the way
in which they are drawn and also on
account of the contents of others, especially
clauses III, VI and VII.
The conservatives assert that this
action is embarrassing, inasmuch as
it practically ties the hands of any
commission that might be 6ent to
Washington.
