To the Editor of the Dispatch: The long dry season has ceased < and the refreshing showers came, 1 mingled with some hail, accompanied with flashing lightnings and roaring thunder. Some of our farmers are ready to plant corn while others are just commencing to prepare their lands. 1 V-o o h ! Have you heard that sound? Old March came in gentle as a lamb, but be has been roaring as a lion for lo, these many days since. Destructive forest fires have been 1 raging over this part of the county during the dry, windy weather. We : hope our good people, one and all, will keep their fire in their pockets. The recent cold snap has put a | pale sickening appearance to small ! grain, but not seriously damaged. Our southern people in the cotton ' growing belt are preparing for nve cent cotton this fall, unless provi- 1 dence favors the planters. 1 The merchants of our little town 1 are doing a fairly good business for the time of year. Over twelve million human beings are now in reach of the goBpel, as protestants proclaim it, who never enjoyed this blessing before. There is now on us a responsibility to send the gospel as we believe it, to our new possessions. Let us in all good faith accept the religious as well as the territorial expansion, and let u? see in this connection more than mere tradeand commercial facilities. The Anglo Saxon is now on trial ai his flag has been politically. Of the $14,000,000 given last year for missions by the entire human family, our family alone, toe Aoglo-kaxon, gave $12,000,000 leaving only $2,000,000 to be given by the lest of mankind. Add to this, too., that he is a protestant and it only increases his responsible possibili:ie9. The influence and example of our fl ig in the great eastern complication is giving to us an influence and a power for Chrbt that will be eDj >yed by no other nation or power on earth. This only renews our alligence in a more em GOODS COWP criEe., . Patronage. Polite am phasized manner to our denonrna* tional fidelity, since we preach a faith I ana adnere to a oeiiei wnicn is auvocated by no other religious body of men on earth. Oar belief is a peculiarly distinguishing feature of Baptist only. To meet these widening fields is a solemn duty. This can be done only by increased contributions of the means in which we have been blest, to be used in turn to bless others with greater riches than worldly gain. As Moderator of your Association and Chairman of your Executive Board, I do earnestly ask and solicit that each minister and church urge on its members the great needs of the hour and that at the two Union meetings to be held on the 5:h Sunday next an urgent appeal be made for a liberal offering to be sent to Dr. R J. Willingham, Richmond, Virginia, and that each church take up a collection at its next meeting for this great end. I trust that each member will feel his own personal duty to his sovereign Lord and not lea.ve to others what he should do himself. Remember that it as urgent case and of great increasing magnitude. It is import ant that this be done and sent forward before the meeting of the May convention, and it is equally important that these needs be frequently preached to the churches and constant appeals be made to their liberality. The kingdom of God is the most expansive and its spirit is the most imperialistic of any government and to meet these features will take men and money. To protestants this is an eventful day freighted with grave realities, far greater than can be covered over by the platform of political creeds. Fraternally, D. J. Knotts, Moderator Lex. Baptist Ass.
