pay out the $50,000 extra for

A negro was carried before Judge
It. C. Watte, charged with the usual
crime, at Florence last week, plead
gu.ity and was sentenced to ten years
in the penitentiary in less than
twenty minutes. This was a recordbreaker
in such cases.

has been granted a pension cn account
of the service of her sod, Jacob
A. Epting, as a soldier in the Span
ish-American war, and wbc died cf
disease in Cuba in Ffb:uary, 1899.
The pension dates from May 9,1899.
There is a family living in Pickers
county that has a record most remarkable
and cne seldom acquired
by any family. The mother was
married when 11 jcars old. She is
now 26 and has 14 living children.
The oldest one of the family has married
and has one child. Therefore
she is a grandmother at 26 years of
age.
The Spartanburg City Council has
ordered that all persons within the
incorporate limits of the town who
have not been successfully vaccinated
in the last seven years must be
vaccinated at once. Those refusing
shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor
aDd subject to a fine not exceeding
8100 or imprisonment not
exceeding thirty days.

The latest account places the
number of persons drowned one hundred
and thirty, of whom eighty
were Chinese, among them being
consul General Wildmar, wife, two
