Promptly at the appointed hour, Jadge G ige was escorted to the court house by Sheriff CLughman and immediately convened the February term of the Court of G naral Sessiois for Lexington county. All the odicers of the court were in their places excepting Stenogra pber Mac-Feat, who arrived on tne midday train. All of the grand jurors were present excepting one who was reported sick and was excused by the Judge. The jury commissioners drew the name of W. C SenD, to complete the panel and the oath was administered, after the election of Mr. W. H. F. Rist as foreman. They speedily completed their duty and were discharged yesterday in the forenoon. Judge Gage has the reputation: of being an able jurist and he certainly disposes the business of the court with a promptness that shows him j to be an industrious and hard working presiding officer, who does not consume the time of the court in unnecessary delays. His charge to the grand jury was brief, clear and concise and his culture and dignity has won for him the good opinion of i oar people. Solicitor Thurmond has pushed j the work of the court with remarka ble rapidity and has handled the ( cases with ability and fairness to the State, which he so faithfully represents and the defendants whose duty it is to prosecute. This is the first term that Mr. ( Samuel B. George has served as , Cieikof the Court, but; having been j trained and educated in the office < under Cieik Spann, the work required of him is familiar and he is i prompt, careful and his records are 1 ^1 ?-> rkoftGn lrcnn in Kn cJnoQD c. auu UCUtiJ J.U h/UOtuv?JU c like order. ' Sheriff Ciugbman is giving satisfaction to bench and bar alike and keeps perfect order during the sessions of the court, which is very ( satisfactory to all concerned. ( True bills were returned in all 1 cases except the State vs. Chal. 1 Stoudemire, charged with house- * breaking and larceny, and there were 1 no verdict of guilty. The case sgainst Lodrick T. Perry, charged with murder, was 1 continued until the Ssptamber term. * William McCoy, who stated that ] he was from Columbia, plead guilty t to the charge of breaking in Rev. c Lvbrand's house in Brookland, and c larceny therein and was given fifteen months on the chain gang. Arthur Samuel, another negro upon similiar charge, plead guilty ( and this offense being more grave, t he was promptly given two years on 5 - - ( the chaiD gang. j e The first trial was that of W. Fick- j ling Mack, of Gaston, upon the ] charge of the murder of Sam Blue, 1 a negro, on December 10, 1900. 5 There was only one witness for the ' State. Mr. Sharpe represented the J defendant. The trial was very short ] and resulted in a verdict of acquittal. The case against J. C. Long 1 charged with stealing cross ties, was continued. ' The grand jury returned a true j bill against Wm. Butler and Agnes Casteeliar, for housebreaking and ! larceny, afterwards the Solicitor en- 1 tered a nol pros. Wm. Kelly, Fed Kelly, Dave Kelly, Jim Kelly, Luther Johnson and John Stroman answered to gambling and William, Fed and Jim Kelly plead guilty. The two latter were given 3 months or $25 and William received G months or $50. j William told the Judge he had beeD j on the chain gang before. Jesse Jones, another negro, also called Jesse Stuckman sometimes, 1 entered a plea of guilty of gambling and was sentenced to 3 months or i $25. John Backer, a Batesburg negro was tried for the killing of another negro. Will Clark, in that town some ( time ego, and was acquitted. He was represented by Mr. Strotherand Mr. Asbill. 1 The last trial in the sessions of court was Charley Williams for the ^ murder of Edd Posey, in Bull Swamp township, on the 2od day of \ F, bruarv. this Year. Mr. J. A. Mul ler represents the defendant. The verdict was guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 10 years in the penitentiary. This wound up the business of the court of Stsaions and it adjourned sine die. The Court of Common Pieas will convene next Monday morning at 10 a. m. To the Hon. Geo. W. We iiDcI the wind mill used in raising water for the supply of the jail has been geared wrong which causes more friction than is necessary and consequently the wind power is not sufficient to give it full propelling power. We ask that the matter be looked after at once by the proper authorities. Jn connection with this matter we would recommend that a sufficient piping be attached and a sufficient supply of hose to distribute the water over the jail property in case of fire.
