The Fourth Annual Fair of the Lexington CLunty Fair Association .19 now a thiDg of the past; its history has been written and the friendly rivally among the exhibitors for the blue and red ribbons has been settled. To say that it was a success is but to say the truth. It eclipsed all previous fairs in every particular. The attendance was large'; the exhibits more numerous and of a superior qualit}; the peanut vendors and the Coney It land sausage men have left for fresher fields and greener pasture', and the fair ground is as silent an 1 lonesome as the ficticious "Deser'el Village/' The management of the fair have every reasQn to congratula'e them selves on the successful termination of ibis fair and the highly creditable manner in which it was conducted. They certainly deserve, and should receive the fullest meed cf praise from their fellow citizens on account of their untiring efiorts to make the fair worthy of LexiDgton county. A walk through the various departments would convince anyone that the farmers of LexiDgton county are in the front rank of their avocations and that her good housewives are not to be outdone in the* domestic tffairs of farm and home lire. The fair was a true representation of the every day life in miniature of the people of L?xiogton county. Oae fact should be borne in mind, and that is, that every exihibit was the product of Lexington brawn and brain. ' As far as our information goes, aDd we believe that we can state it as a cer t?inty, Dot a siDgle'article was produced outside the limits of the county, bpught and exhibited here as a home production as is too often the case with many other fairs. We draw attention to this only to impress the fact upon the minds of our people that in a competition with other Sfc tions of the State, or the United States for that matter, tbey have nothing to make them ashamed, aDd that when merit and excellence are the ciiterions they will generally come off victorious, and win the blue ribbon every time. This has been demonstrated by the excellent exhibits at the late County Fair and the large number of premiums taken by residents of this county at every State Fair for years. Competent judges, both residents of this county aDd visitors from abroad, are Unanimous in saying that the live stock exhibit was exception 1 1L.1 -f any nae, BurpasBiug tuai ui auy previous year9 aDd excelling that shown at many of the State Fairs. The field department, with its grain, pease, sugar cane, turnips, po tatoee, hay and many other farm products, was a repository of some cf as fioe produc!s as are g'ovn any where in the State , The household aDd fancy woik departments were filled tc overflowing ~ - __ ibe handiwork of our women acd the exhibits were a credit to them. cs nnn H.rv /tonorlmflrif. r?nmfi nr? I., of EdgeCeld, was enchanting and gave general satisfac-ion. The boys won golden opinions from our girls and the insti% tute which they represented has been favorably considered by many. Wednesday witnessed the largest crowd on the ground with Thursday a cloee second. This was the day for the reunion of the old heroes who wore the gray in the memorable four years' war for State's Rights. They came siDgly, in twos, threes and crowds until a batallion or so had assembled to talk over their \ - ' " * camp life and bow they made their friends, the enemy who wore the blue .skedaddle from many a hard fought and bloody field. It waB a fine body of the old South Carolina manhood that passed in review and we thought that the cause having such men as defenders could never die. To the- regret of the veterans neither Gen. Butler or Gen.- Walker was present, both of whom sent excuses. Cob Brooke, the orator of the day, ovei flawed with enthusiasm and as he recounted the details of many a hard fought batte participated in by m<iny of his hearers, the flashing eye and the proud mein indicated that memory's strings had been touched and the old gray haired veterans whose feet are almost touching the eternal campiDg ground, were boys once more figbtiDg their country's battle. CjI Books made an interesting talk coDfiDed entirely to historical facts. The old veterans had for an escort a troop of cavalry coDsisitiDg of 37 beautiful.and charming youDg ladies, ivbn lent enchantment to the scence, under the command of "the pal ant O'i. Etrd." It was indeed a beautiful scene as the graceful riders, handsomely costumed ia black, white and * .. . gray, passed in review aDd went through the cavalry evolutions, and one that will not sood be forgotten by those who witnessed it.
