J The paramount duty of every t South Carolina Democrat is to go to j the polls on the G.h of November and vote for tho nominees of the j party, National, State and county, i This duty is made essential to the political, moral and financial interests ] of the South in general and the State j in particular, in view of the fact that , it is the evident intention of the ( Republican party, should it succeed ( in controlling Congress, in crippling the South by reducing the representation in that body, giving coloring ] for the intended crime by claiming that more votes are polled in many a ( Congressional District in the Northern States than are polled in the entire State of South Carolina at i a general election. Our noble leader. Senator B R. Tillman, warned the people of the purpose of the Repub- j lican party during the late State campaign, and urged the Democrats ] to turn out and vote in the general election. Don't stay at home on the i day of election thinking that your i vote is not needed, for if there ever was a time when it was needed that i time is now. We hope to see Lexington county poll her full Demo- i cratic strength on the 6.h of Novem ' ber, and it will be done if every ? voter will but do his duty. Ex-Senator John Sherman of Ohio, 1 died at Lis home in the city of Wash- < ington on the morning of October 22, in the 78 h year of his age. He 1 was a man who failed to live up to * his great opportunities and the ex pectation of bi3 political friends. ^ The mo6t memorable incidents connected wish his public career were 1 bis disreputable connection with 1 the crime of dt monetizing silver and Lis inveterate hatred of the South. For these two characteristics he was ( pre-eminently prominent. Peace be to his ashes. * * * "Now some years' ago the name of Frog Level waschaDged to Pomaria, something the postal authorities did not know, it seems."? | Columbia State. Our usually accurate morning cotemporary is in error. It was the name of the town of Prosperity that was changed from Frog Level and j notPomaiia as it states. The nrme cf the town of Po ma lia remain just as it has since the memory of man runneth not to the contrary. The voters of the State will be cilled upon to vote upon two pro- | posed amendments to the State Constitution, the nature of which will be seen by reference to the notice of ifcn State Election in this issue. We can see no harm in voting for these proposed amendments as it only gives the people of the places directly concerned in their passage an opportunity to decide whether or not they will vote the tax upon themselves necessary to obtain the relief sought. If our representation in Congress is cut down because of the failure of our people to go to the polls on election day, Novfinber 6tb, it will also reduce our influence in the election of President and Vice President. If you want to help this aloDg, then stay away from the polls on election day. The Republicans of this district have put up a negro by the name cf Dantzler to run against Congressman Stokes, and they announce that they will make a contest for the seat. Those Democrats who fail to vote on electiou day will be playing into the hands of these Republican sheme3. The Powers have about agreed upon the terms for the settlement of the disturbances in China, the essential feature of which is that the ringleaders of the Boxers shall be severally punished according to the gravity of their crimes. The great coal strike in the Penn sylvania coal fields will soon end. President Mitchell, of the labor union, is accredited with having said that the miners are ready to come to terms. And now comes Lieutenant R. P. Hobson, known to fame as the "mucbly kissed man/' and affirms that "Admiral Sampson is dying of a broken heart, owing to the thought that his fellow countrymen were so ULkind." The threatened suits of Uuclo Sam against the State have been withdrawn, an act of Congress having been discovered repealing the section under which they ^ere brought. Chairman J.
