chants say collections have not been | '
so good io years, though the crops
are short, but they were made on a 1
five cent basis and consequently the
shortage is not so severe.
A sad death occurred last wetk,
that ef M. S R ley, who had only
been here since last January. He
was a native of Saluda county and a
grandson of Capt. Joel Keisler of
Lewiedale. Ooly two years ago he
was married to Miss QueeDie Spann,
daughter of our Clerk of Court, who '
with a little boy of one year, survives
him. 1
Several persons have been quite 1
sick in town of late, but are well now '
except D. P. Hartley, who is still
somewhat indisposed.
The building boom, which has been '
cn for two or three years, is still at '
its height, and so pressed have the 1
. carpenters been that no odd jobs
could be gotten done for love or
money. A man who had not been in
our town for a few years in comiDg
in a short time ago was so astonished
that he at first could not believe his 1
eyes, so great tad been tne cnanges
and additions tnat had occurred in 1
so brief a period.
The school is in excellent condition
and is the pride of our town. The
addition to the Factory will about
trible its capacity and large numbers i
of operatives will be employed in
addition to those already engaged in i
the building.
The Methodist congregation is
now worshipping in the old school
bouse, as the church has been dis
mantled and will bo rebuilt on a
neat and modern plan.
Mr. Stokes' large brick store is
rearing completion and will be a
splendid structure. The addition to
the store of Hartley & Co., has en
abled them to about double their
stock.
While the "New York Racket
Store," has been converted into a
double "Decker" and has thereby enabled
the proprietors to make large
additions to Lis stocK.
The Dew ami beautiful residences
of J. J. Riwl aud M. E. Rutland
show the progressive tendency of
our citizens.
Some time in the future I may write
a brief resume of the business of the
different enterprises in our town, and
I know the facts will startle the uninitiated.

The health of our commuuity has
been very good with a few excep
tions among which is Mrs. ft. B.
Barre, who has been quite sick from
time to time for the last several

County Cotton Growers' Convention.

In compliance with a call made by
Hon. J. C. Wilborn, President of tboState
Cotton Growers' Convention, I
hereby call a meeting of the Lexington
County Cotton Growerb' Convention,
to meet at Lexington, on "Wednesday,
21th next, (During County
Fair Week) at 9:30 a m. for the pur
pose of electiDg olJicersoi ineuoumy
Cotton Growers' Convention and to
elect delegates to the State Cotton
Growers' Convention, which will be
held in Columbia on October 31b',
at 8:30 p. ru.
This is a matter of great interest,
not only to the cotton growers of the
county and State, but to all citizen
of every avocation as well, aDd manifesting
a great interest in the agricultural
as well as a progressive,
social, political and pecuniary interests
of our county and State, I
bespeak a full attendance at the
Cjunty Convention, so that we may
select a suitable number of officers to
represent the Couuty Cotton Growers
and a suitable delegation to represent
us at tbo State Convention.

There is a big kick ail over the
State against the rales to the State
Fair as announced by the railroad?.
It seems to us that as a matter of
business tha railroads should reduce
rather than increase therailroad fare.
Tha cheaper the fare, the greater the
number of people who will attend,
and the larger the crowd the more
money the re will be for the railroads
It cost as much to haul one passenger
as it does to haul sixty, and il
will pay the railroads better to haul
sixty persons at 50 cents each than
to haul one at $1. It seems that the
railroads by the illiberality are trying
to kill the goose that lays the
golden eggs.
