The result of the second p. i nary election was Dot a surprise to those who studied the situation with an unbiased mind. From the opeDiDg of the campaign till the result was announced we considered the nomination of Governor McSweeney as a foregone certainty. His administra tion has been in the whole satisfactory and he was entitled to a full term. Evans 42,522 WhartoD 15,912 The city fair association, composed of the leading citizens and business men of Columbia, is making active preparations for the successful entertainment of the visitors to the State Fair. A very full programme has been arranged containing many especial attractions, among which we notice that there will be a military encampment and prize drill; the city will put on her gala attire; one day will be set apait for college students and others are now being considered. The State Press Association is now in session at Harris Springs, and the poor hungry editors are now getting three fquare meals a day, with plenty of "liihia and soda'for an appetizer. The sparkling effervescence occasionally overflows into the pathway of the downtrodden editor. The wild utterances of the Columbia State must not be taken seriously. Some of Clemson'a graduates are receiving salaries as high as $200 per month. Dots from Rocky Well. To the Editor of the Dispatch: Rain a plenty. Kind of a September gale. Everything looks refreshing and it has turned much cooler since the recent rain. Now is the time to sow your turnip patch. Mr. C. R Dreher is quite sick with a case of fever. Mr. James Smith has bis new saw mill at work now. Mr. Pickens Bouey moved in the Sim Taylor old home last week. Miss Lula Monts of Richland, visited relatives and friends near here last week. The candidates were thinned to a good stand Tuesday, the 11th, aod the most of them ran pretty close. Rest wishes for the Dispatch. C. F. L. Lexington County Alliance Meeting. The next regular meeting of Lexington County Alliance No. 721, will be held with rine Kidge Alliance on the second Friday in October, being the 12th day. To the Editor of the Dispatch: To my fellow citizens of Lexington county: It has been my purpose n recent years to stay out of the newspapers, but as the public print is at this time the only medium through which I can reach my fellow citizens, I trust I will be pardoned for publicly expressing my gratitude to those who have endorsed my course in the House of Representatives and have stood by me in elevating me to the State Senate; and to those who saw tit to support either of my opponents, let me say that I have not one word of complaint to utter agaiDst them. I have taken my success with becoming modesty I hope, aDd I do consider it a great success to take a man from the rank and file of the people and promote him to the high and dignified office of State Sen: t >r. f It was, if I remember correctly, Lord Bacon who said that the duties of life are greater than life I am one who believes that the duties of .office are greater than office. I realize full well that I dow have the responsibility resting upon me of filling a position which in the recent past haB been filled by such master minds as Wingard, Meetze, Efird and Griffith, and I do not claim to be the equal of these gentlemen in ability, but what I am lackirg in " abilitv I do hope to be able to mate * v *. up, in 6ome measure at least, in mj earnestness and zeal to do something for the masses of the people of my county and State. For every harsh word uttered in the heat of political dibile, and for ! every unkind expression during the eampaigD, I shall undertake to rise ' above and wiil be the servant of the I whole people and will work iu ha- - ? mony and accjrd with the delegation sent to the House of H?presentatives ' by you. Before closing let me say a word about the inattention sometimes pa d to our general elections. We have saved the State and this is the time of all others, to set to work to save the nation. Let every one who claims to be a white man, a citizen and a Democrat go to the polls at our next general election and vote for Stokes, Bryan and Stevenson.
