The corn crops in the lower por;ion of the county are not in as good i condition as they were last year. The pea crop also is very small and ;he harvest premises to be light. The dry weather has materially ?ffected the cotton crop. Mr. John Adam Seay provided a fine barbecued dinner at Brookland last Saturday. His meats were :ooked to a turn and were well seasoned, while the accompanying refreshments were all that could be desired. So far he stands champion cuist of the State. The crowd who will be present at ! the State Campaign meeting next j Tuesday at this place should remember that Marks' is prepared to feed j the hungry with a splendid dinner. ! Leesville is spreading herself to I have a big crowd at her barbecue on Friday, August 17th, and the indications ail point in the direction of a large number of people from A:keD, baluda and .Lc-xington ceing present on that occasion, and of course the candidates will take advantage of this crowd and be present in great droves to sing the song of office. D Sons was taken suddenly ill last Sunday, and in a short while ^ afterward his soul passed across the river of death and entered that on- ^ known country beyond. He was well advanced in age and resided in the j factory village in this place for some time. He was a quiet and unassum pj ing man, but true to all the duties of husband, father, friend and neighbor, g and now that he has paid the debt that we all have to pay, he has en- -j tered into that rest which is promised as a reward of a well spent life. ^ The Lexington Rifles. ^ At a regular meeting of this military company held August 7th, there j] were several nromotions made occa sioiied by tbe resignation of 1st Ser- g geant L W. I had pi a longiDg to meet the candidates for b< the various offices, aDd the voters also, tl I wanted to see whether they moved ni around pleasantly and mingled with fc each other as of old. I was glad to ai note that everything appealed to be D moving along pleasantly, the candi- C dates in good humor and all conS- y< dent of success. I noticed some new ia faces among the candidates for county ai officers, and missed some who were st candidates when I used to go around ai the county as a candidate myself. I di could not but think of the years ago g' when I canvassed old Lexington as a m candidate for Clerk of Court, Treas tl urer, and then for State Senator, and S I almost felt a strong desire to be in ic the race again with the boys. I met fi a great many old friends whom I had ei not seen in a long time, which gave oj me great pleasure, and I think they ol were equally glad to see me. oi Mr. Editor, if I had the time to o< spare from my business I would go a] around with the candidates to all the te mfetings just to see all my old aI friends. F Cayce, in this county last Monday. v He was about 70 years of age aud has been in feeble health for some r t^me. He was known to many of our citizens and had a large circle of 1 friends in Columbia, where he resid- * ed for years.
