[NOT A PROHIBITION CANDIDATE.
Some people have the mistaken
i lea that CjI. Hoyt is the candidate
of the prohibitionsls. Such is not
the case. The absolute prohibitionists
have no candidate in the field
for Governor. Col. Hoyt himself
does not claim to represent them, for
his only contention is for the sale of
intoxicating liquors through drug
stores and to restrict its sale to three
purposes, namely, medicinal, mechanical
and sacramental. This is
the kind of prohibition that Col.
"RTnrf. Adtfnc*te<a. and the Derson who
votes for him under the impression
that he is voting fur prohibition ie
laboring under a mistake. We have
today under the dispensary system
a more practical and a better prohibition
law than that proposed by
Col. Hoyt, because the State abso
lufcely forbids the sal6 of intoxicating
liquors for any purpose, except
through regularly established dispensaries,
and then only under certain
wholesome restrictions, and be
ciuse the State is ioa betterpositioD,
with all of its machinery and with
the revenue from the sale if whisky,
to enforce the law without increasing
taxes than it would be under Col
Hoyt's proposition, with little or no
revenue with which to properly enforce
the law.
Ail this hue and cry about the
State being in the liquor business is
* only an appeal to the sentimental
and emotional passions of the people
with the view of awakening a sympathy
favorable to the opponents of
the dispensary. From the time
when the first drop of whisky wag
sold in this State up to the present
time the State has either directly 01
indirectly been in the whisky business
and there i9 no getting round
this fact. Under the old license system
she was nothing less than the silent
partner of the tavern and bar keepers
because she legalized the sale of in
toxicants. She sold her sovereign
power, her absolute right, to certain
men for a money consideration foi
the purpose of raising a revenue acc
to this extent it became a partner it
business with every man to whom
she sold a license." The same con
dition would exist should the high
license or the drug store system ol
selling whisky be adopted.
TVe have not a word against CjI
Hoyt's individual character, but w<
diff r with him as to the best way oi
managing the liquor traffic in the
State.
It will be seen that the Executive
Committee has called upon the can
- ? J XT . A
chelates lor the senate ana nouse ic
state their position on the liquoi
question and they will doubtless com
ply with the request. The p'eople
should now see to it that they do sc
with a clearness and distinctness
that will leave no doubt on the
minds of the voters as to how the
candidate stands on this issue.
Id claiming in one breath that Tillman's
entrance into the campaigr
has help his candidacy and in the
next breath declare that the Senatoi
h*8 no light to discuss State politics
Col. Hoyt is about as consistent as
In is in claiming to be a prohibitionist
and trying to straddle the dispensary
and high license systems tc
ride into the Governor's office.
The candidates of the Stra'ghtouts
have drawn factional lines in Charleston
and are appealing to the voters
f jT support solely on the ground that
they are "uoterrified straightouts."
Both the Greenville News and the
Aiken Journal and Review are painfully
silent about that "voice from
the tomb."
Governor McSweeney has made an
excellent Governor and his administration
has given general satisfaction.
Ouly those who are seeking his office
and some disgruntled politicians are
his political opponents and would
welcome bis defeat.
The people of North Carolina
adopted a constitutional amendmei t
making an educational and property
qualification for the exercise cf the
elective franchise.
Senator Tillman is a member cf

) Dem. Executive Committee Meeting.
The County Democratic Executive
" Committee held an important and
1 interesting session in the court house
> last Monday and transacted conbider'
able business in reference to the
> management cf the County Cam5
paign, which opens at Swansea torrnrrnw.
Tbe matter of limning the time of
each speaker was brought up and
1 fully discussed and it was agreed
1 that'Congressman be given 45 minutes;
Solicitors, 20 minutes each;
! Senator, 40 minutes each; Kepre5
sentatives, 30 minutes each and the
balance of the time is to be divided
' up among the other candidate?.
' It was resolved to reconsider the
last meeting of the committee in
reference to filing pledges and assess'
ments and the time for doing so was
extended to the 9:h day of August.
Oq motion of James B. Addy the
Chair appointed a committee of
three consisting as follows, Dr. J. L.
Shuler, S. D. B. Lever and K B.
Barr, as to the qualifications of a
candidate to enter the race fur an
office. The committee made the f *1lowiDg
report, which was adopted:
That no one whose name is on the
Democratic club roll shall be dt barred
from making the race in the primary,
if he files his pledge and pays
his assessment.
After a full discussion it was decided
to request each candidate t >
express himself on the dispensary or
prohibition, as to which he will support
if elected to the General Assembly.
H. A SpanD, Chairman.
James B. Ad ly, Secretary.
Chairmen, Reverse Your Order.
To the Editor of the Dispatch:
As the day for the opening of the
the county campaign is near at hand,
I will make a suggestion and trust
that it will meet with the approval of
the chairmen of the various meetings.
It is a fact that all the candidates
have been assessed by the committee
m charge and paid their assessment,
therefore, they should all have an
or>Dortunitv to sav a woid from the
speaker's stand if they so desire, for
it is "our campaign and rot theirs,"'
and if the present way of conducting
the meetings is kept up, the little
i fellows wiil have no ebauce, for if
they get on the stand at all, the people
ate worn out with the fine spun
speaches of those whom it takes a
ljng lime to tell little. Such is un
fair. X.jvv, it appears to the writ<r,
that it is out of tl e natural order of
things to commence et the t^p of the
ladder and go dowri. Now t atu
satisfied and feel justified in saying
that if the chairmen would commerce
wi.h the Coroner that they would
reach the candidates for Cieik of the
Court in one and a half hours,
which is about the time that one of
our Senators or Representatives occupy.
I also believe that the ma
j 01 ity of the people will agree with
me that our meetings would be more
orderly aod interesting than they
would be otherwise. 1 could write a
long article justifying my position
but a word to the just and wise
should be siffioient. I H.

Snakes! snakes! snakes! Some
weeks ago the seven sons of one, Mr.
J. K Day, was raking litter in the
woods and killed forty-three (43)
snakes, thought to be horn snakes.
On the first day of AugUBt Mr.
Day and sons were working in a
canal on Black creek, where he is
putting up a mill. Looking up the
canal they saw a large snake coming
down. He came near and stopped,
lifted his head high, and looked venimous,
but he had not found a
coward. With shovel in hand, Mr.
Day walked up in reach and with a
side stroke he separated the monster's
head and body. It was a
rattlesnake, four feet eleven inches
long, seven inches around, seventeen
