The Lexington Dispatch Burned April 25th; rebuilt July 19, 1894 G. 51. BARMAN. Editor and Publisher. LEXINGTON, S. C., WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 1. 1900. Ia attempting to arrest two ne r?rtf/-,rinn?a had character gruto ui JJWVA a police captain and a policeman was shot and killed in New Orleans last week. A posse of indignant citizens was organized to assist the police in capturing the murderers. The negroes also orgauized to protect them Several skirmishes took place be tween the whites and blacks, and the murderers were finally shot and killed and the body of the leader riddled with bullets. During the several engagements six negroes and six whites were killed, and ten negroes and twenty whites wounded. First the enemies of Refoim tried to kill out the rule of the people with the straight-out movement, and failed; then they tried he wageearners' racket, which died in early infancy. Ouce more they appeared in the arena under the name of con servatives and were knocked oat in the first half of the first round; and now we find them arrayed under the banner of prohibition making the same old fight began a decade ago, but so sure as "truth crushed to the earth shall rise again/' so sure will the "unholy alliance", as Senator 0 Tillman calls it, fail. It is eow certain that the members of the foreign legations, (except the German Minister) at Pi kin are alive, but in great danger. All their property has been destroyed and the defense of their lives is being maintained by a supreme effort. It is reported that Gen. Chaffe, commander of the American forces in China, has decided to march to the relief of the imprisoned Ministers at*Pekin without waiting on the decision of the i j? ur? ?.:u i? otner commauuers. xxe wm uc pined by the English troops. Let all Democratic voters make it their business to have their names put on the club rolls. It is a bad practice the way some of them wait for some one else to look out for them. There is no telling but that some of these careless ones might be left out, and when they go to vote find they are not entitled. Kicking won't do them any good then. Have your names put on the books in time. If you are on the roll, see that your neighbor is also. King Humbert, of Italy, was assassinated while attending a distribution of prizes in connection with a gymnastic competition, on last Sunday by a red handed anarchist named Angelo Bressi. The King had just entered his caniage amid the cheers of the crowd, when he was struck by three revolver balls which were fired in quick succession and he expired in a few moments. If the entrance of Tillman in the canvass is winning votes for Col. Hoy t, as the antis are so lustily claiming, why do they so persistently call for his withdrawal? The gist of the whole matter is that Senator Tillman has got the anti dispensaryite9, bar room element and prohibitionists so rattled that they don't know where they are at. At the Gaffuey meeting very few voted for prohibition and two-thirds of those who voted sent their arms np in high glee with applause howling for the dispensary. The crowd hurrahed for Tillman as of old and the hurrahs for him seem to keep up. ?Kohn's Report of the Meeting. The first thing he ran up on in Yoik (a prohibition county) was a ''blind tiger". It was a farce to have liquor always the issue. He wanted the ministers to preach against drunkenness and not against the dispensary or for prohibition.?G. Walt Whitman at Spartanburg. Governor McSweeney is deserving of re election because he has given the State a clean an able administration, and one in which those aspiring to step into his shoes can find no flaws. Rev. We trust that these rains which we are receiving now will aid wonderfully in the yield of our crops. The candidates keep us thinking that there will be better times in the near future, as they promise great things to the voters, '*if you will just elect me." The family barbecue at Priceville, on the 28th inst, was a grand success over all the unfavorable drawbacks; such as rain, etc, during the early morning hours. There were several candidates present and spoke on the different issues. Among those that were present, was Mr. A. Frank Lever, who made an interesting and intelligent soeech. o o ?. Tt also contained much wit and Lumor. Prof. John S. Derrick also distinguished himself at Priceviile. Your scribe attended the Sunday School Convention on last Friday and enjoyed the hospitalities of the people of Lexington. We do not hear anything moie about the daily mail aloDg the route from Lewiedale to Dupler. It is hoped that the people living on the Spool Wheel road from the Augusta road to where the settlement road, known as the Ridge road, leading from Mr. J. H. Drafts' place on the Caarleston road to the Hays bridge, will take an interest in peti tioning the Post Offics Department for a free delivery in some sections and to preserve the post offices along the route, as we feel sure that the citizens who live on this section of the Spool Wheel road, also those residing on the Ridge road, need an increase of mail service. In changing the route of the car rier on his return from Dupler by Messrs. Cephas Sease, J. H. and J. C. Price until he reaches the Spool Wheel road then distribute the mail along this section of road that we have just spoken of until he reaches the Spring Hill and Lewiedule road, at this point make the turn for Lewiedale. By so arranging the route the Postmaster at Lewiedale will be paid something for getting the mail out on this route, as it is now he does not get any pay scarcely. For this reason he does not care to sign a petition for jast a daily mail along the old route. We trust that the citizens will take an interest in getting an increase of service on this route. Editorially The Advocate sav.c: "It needs not many words to characterize this matter. Senator Tillman's letter does not modify his charge. Indeed he explains it and actually argues to sustain his baseless statement?and so adds to the insult. Whereupon it is our duty to ray that his statement is an inexcusable outrage?the greater because made by a man whose position demands particular regard for truth and at least ordinary respect for reputable people. His high opinion of religious people "cuts no figure" when they diff-r with him! Then they are "blind, fanatics, etc." He seems to think he carries all the wisdom of our commonwealth and to differ with him is j folly. His entire course in this affair j deserves rebuke by all religious peo pie. Alliance" the Baptist Courier says j editorially this weeL: "In one of hie recent speeches j Senator Tillman is reported to have speken of an 'unholy ahiucee of pieachers and barkeepers.' We do ' not know whether he is correctly re- J ported or not, but we presume he ( must have said something akin to that to have made such au impression on the reporter's mind. We do not pretend to say what the senator meant and what prompted him to bay it. He was tal'iing of the prohibitionists, anu the hgbt now being made before the people of the State. { He has come forward as the defender of the dispensary and in opposition to prohibition, and he seems to be greatly disturbed because there are some people in South Carolina who are not willing to support the dispensary as against prohibition. He says that there is an 'unholy alliance , of pteachers and barkeepers.' If he means that there has been au understanding between the preacheis and < the barkeepers, on this subject, he is | mistaken. If he means that there : has been formed an organization of these elements for any purpose, he is mistaken, aDd he knows it. If he means,to insinuate that the preachers of South Carolina would fjrm an alliance with barkeepers for ulterior ends, be surely uoes not know the preachers of this State. Where does the'unbol}'alliarce come in ? Are the preachers 'unholy' and are they working for an 'unholy' cause when tbey work for prohibition? Or, are the baikeepers the 'UDhoty' part of the alliance ? If so, what makes them 'unholy,'the liquor traffic ? That is the very thing the senator is defending. The dispensary was brought into beiDg (and the senator says he is the father of it) for that very purpose. Is it possible that be is willing to admit that he put upon the people of South Carolina and'unhol}' thiDg, and that he is doing his best to keep up this 'nnholy' work? Senator Tillman evidently is uneasy lest, the preachers' good iifluence will be e -1 1. i. 1 1. power:ut enougn iu ueip uitaa uuwu the dispensary, and he seems willing to throw contempt upon them by linking them wiih the baikeepers, and in this why break their hold upon the people. It is not probable that the people of the State will kindly receive this remark of Senator Tillman, and he has in his zeal for his belovtd institution, the dispen- I eary, gone too far and his fling at the preachers should be resented by all light thinking people."
