Sam Jones Pays His Respects to a Fellow Preacher-Characteristic Remarks From the Evangelist-Smoth Gospel Preaching is Not What is Wanted Nowadays-Some Hot Shot. The Rev. Sam P. Jones has written the following article for the Atlanta Journal: Much is being said and written on sensational preachers and the meth ods of the Rev. Dr. Bulldozer these days. Atlanta and Chattanooga both have preachers who seem, in the opinion of some, to go outside of the regular gospel line and attack those who oppress the poor and denounce high (ffi rials of their debauchery and unseemly conduct. There may be two extremes; the Rev. Dr. Bulldozer may or may not go outside the boundary line of legitimate gospel preaching, but there is a Rev. Dr. Puppet some where in this country who will go a thousand miles around in thought and imagination before he will condemn or dtnouDce anjthing that the devil approves. Now, I have a few btief remarks to make, in a perfectly good humored way. When we take up the critic of Rev. Dr. Bulldizer and find him to be a little editor or an anonymous scribbler who perhaps never heard a sermon from the pulpit they are cri icising, and very doubtful whether thev have heard half a dozen sermons a year for the last ten years. This sort of a critic is about as capable of criticising the true minister of the gospel as Simon Magus was to receive the power of Const when he thought that it was a thing that could be bought with money. Atlanta has but one Boughton, Chattanooga has but tne Mock and New Yoik but one Parkhurs?; and if we only have one preacher in each ci'y who displeases the editors and Christless critics, thegoepelof Christ won't suffer much at their hand3. A preacher gets his instruction from the Bible and his convictit ns from the Divine Spirit. The Bible says to every preachei: "I put you as a watchman upon the tower; if you warn my people their blood be upon their own skirt?; if you warn them not, then the blood be upon your skirts." Again, the Bible tells us to rebuke them that sin openly that others may fear. I weigh the critics more than I do the criticisms, and it is seldom in my life that I have ever known a godly man to criticise a preacher who had the courage of his convictions. If a man is true to bis church, prays in bis family night and morning, at' ' J- -/ tends upon ine oraiuaucta ui mc church, and gives one-tenth of all he has to God, the public will give some weight to his criticisms, but a man who runs with the devil's gaDg all the week and is seen in church only of a Sunday morning, or maybe not a half dozen Sunday mornings in a year, his criticisms of a pulpit?a courageous pulpit?weigh very little wilh the rank and file of humaniiy. I have learned this to be true; that a man who is not careful about his religious life is very choice in his style of preachers and very particolar that the preacher shall say nothing that will disturb conscience or displease the devil. I remember on one occasion I had preached a terrific sermon denouncing sin and sinners in unmeasured terms. A big old colonel walking away with his wife said to her: ''My dear wife, I would not have you heard such a sermon for all the world ?bo vulgar and indecent." She replied: ' Why, husband, I thought it was ore of the best sermons I ever beard.*' To the pure all things are pure, and vice versa. We hear very much these dajs about the gospel and what the gospel is, and Dr. Bulldozer going out of hi-s way to attack an ice company for grinding the poor. If the critic will read the Bible be will find that the strongest fulmioations and denudations uttered by the Divine Christ were against those who extortioned on and robbed the poor, the widow and the orphan, denouncing them as > "a generation of vipers" aod asking tbem how they vould 4vsc p j the damnation of hell/' I The smooth gospel preaching, so , called would have saved this country , then we would have been mingling I with angels on earth, but you need not talk to me about moral suasion Moral suasion is a fellow sitting on the fence trying to call hogs out cf ' the corn field, when the bogs have i all they want at haDd and are paying no attention to the moral persuader on the ftncr; but if the fool cn the fence would put a dog in there afier those hogs they would come a-humpiDg then. To say the least of it, Dr. Build zer is doing ' something, and the doctor who don't buildozp, the devil has got him sidetracked, so to speak. If the public will put the critic upon the scales and weigh him, tben I am perfectly willing for the public to ponder over the deliverances of the critic. Hts Life Was Saved. ! t Mr. J. E. Senator George Hoar, of Massachusetts, says that the statement of Buencamtno, the Secretary of the Filipino government, that be has been in secret correspondence with Aguinaldo, is "an infernal lie." The situation in China is beeom ing graver each day. Missionaries are still being massacred by the unbelieving Boxers. The Chinese are entrenched outside of the capital and they propose to resist the advance of the international troops. Governor Mount, of Indians, has refusad to honor the requisition of Governor Beckham, of Kentucky, for the delivery of W. S.
