Hfl The town council bas rejected the application of the South Carolina Telephone Company for the right of way for the erection of poles and wires through the streets, on the ground that to do so under the wording of the application, would be a monopoly. The council is not op posed to the company coming here and are willing to grant any reasonable concessions, but will not gue any company or individual a monopo ly of the streets. The Methodist of the Lewiedale Circuit are indeed fortunate in having secured the services of the Rev. J. M. Lawson, as pastor for the coming year. He has the reputation of being a devoted and earnest soldier of the cross, a zealous pastor and a good preacher. He married Miss Jodie Russell, of Abbeville, who is a granddaughter of the late Judge Lemuel Boozer of this county. ^ Since the time when the memory of man runneth not to the contrary portions of the public road leading from the northern suburbs of Columbia to the Broad river bridge have been in a notoriously bad condition. The other day, Ciptain Sligh, with his chain gang, got on it and put it in thorough repair with a composite of sand and clay, for which humane act he richly deserves the everlasting thanks and gratitude of man and best who travel that way. Out of the abundance of a heart overflowing with gratitude, a Lexingtonian, whcse business often calls him that way, publicly thanked C*pt. Section 270 of the law in reference to the assessment of taxes, (llovised Statues,) reads us follows: All property shall be valtiod for taxation at its true value in money, which in all cases not specially provided lor by law, shall be held to be as follows, to wit: For personol property the usual selling price on the usual Urms ol similar property at administrator's or executors sales, at the place where the return is made; and for real property, the usual selling price on the usual terms of similar property at sales for partition under the order of court, at the place where the return is to be made. If there is no usual selliug price, then at what is honestly believed could be obtain* ed for the same at a fair sale under the conditions above mentioned.
