To the Editor of the Dispatch: As it has bees seme time since ocr town has been represented in the Dispatch, and as the busy holidays are dawning upon us, and this will be our oDly chance to itemize ourselves till after Cbiistmas, we give you a few locals. Wood and lumber are the leading products of manufacture and commerce now. The woodmen cut and haul almost day and night, till the Columbia, Newberry and Laurens railroad is lined with it and with J>oth sawed and hewed timber. The sidings are so blocked with it that there is scarcely any room for any thing else. Shippers besiege the station agents and officials day and ? night for cars and wood trains. The railroad is handling thousands ol cords of wood and millions of feet of lumber and cannot supply the demand for cars fast enough. Where will this thing stop! The cotton crop turned out about alf this year, but the rise in price over last year resulted in nearly the same money for the farmer. Con I v aid potatoes fell quite short A g eat deal of rice was planted and the yield was fairly good, but the price is low and not much net profits will be realized frftm this crop. Pto pie generally are sowing heavily of oats. Most every family has some nice hogs to kill, and it seems there will not be much of a shortage on maate. Takirg th 3 county at large we believe it to be on a better foot~ ing than it was a year ago, and it is to be hoped that our people will continue to trample under foot this obnoxious credit business which has ruined so many farmers and broken up so many merchants. Mr. C. P. Rjbinson has put in another sawing outfit, making three that himself and brother are running. He has also enlarged upon his planeing mill and has in his employ a master workman, and will prepare any and all kinds of lumber, mouldings, brackets, etc. Also our Judge, J. M. Shealy, has resumed his sawmill business, and Gardner and Geiger are slicing up logs with a swiftness that cannot be discounted. Some improvements are being made in cur town in the way of building and it is risiDg slowly but surely. We have a very good school under the care of Miss Miles, but owing to expenses previously incurred the term will be cut short. The ladies' prayer meeting at the 4 Methodist church here convenes every Friday evening, and seems to be well attended. Also regular prayer services are held every Sunday night by the brethren of the congregation. Mr. B. F. Derrick, son of Mr. Walter Derrick of the Hilton neigh borhood, is with us training for a telegraph operator and railroad agent. He is a steady young man, and will no doubt master a situation in a reasonable length of time. Mr. H. Yansant's family has nursed the third case of typhoid fever through since the l2.h of August and are now nursing the fourth case. Oar townsman, Mr. G. D. Bonknight, is just recovering from a spell of the same kind of fever, and he also has a little son down with it. It will interest the friends of Mr. J. H. Nunamaker to know that he is so much improved in health as to be out on our streets occasionally. Union Chapel church has a bell' and an organ added to its services now, which seems to indicate that our town don't intend to be behind other towns of like proportions and aspirations. . # It will please the many friends and acquaintances of Rev. J. S Riddle to know that your scribe visited his family at Newberry yesterday and found them well, cheerful, and happy. Now, Mr. Editor, we will have to \ eat the gobbler before you hear any more from us, and after that is over we will see what we can fiad to tell you. At the South Carolina Conference of the Methodist Episcoj. il Churcf, South, 'which closed its session at Orangeburg Monday, considerable church, work was accomplished. Toe Conference was very liberal in its appropriation to the higher educational interests of the church. The ; comedy was a delightful one and was participated in by about twenty of Batesburg's prettiest girls. Miss Rjbbie Wakefield, as President, showed gifts of the highest order, and Miss Kate Gainey, as Secretary, played the role to perfection, while Miss Eva Jones, as Treasurer, read the report of expenditures for love powders, &e., with telling effect, and Prof. J. Saturday the Ridge Association of Teachers met in the Institute build. ing here. Prof. Hinnant of Johnston, in the chair. The discussions were interesting and instructive. ' Among the prominent educators present I will mention Prof. J. S. Baan of Johnston,, also Profs. Hinnant and Ellerbee of Johnston and Ridge Spriog, Prof. Atkinson, Prof. Stnckey, Miss Lucy Cbilds, Miss Mcintosh and MisR Jones; from Monetta Miss Belle Williams, and Batesburg was represented by Profs. Perry and WatsoD, Miss Robbie Wakefield, Miss Kate Gainey, Miss Eva Jones and Miss Horteose Landrum, Rev. A. C. Wilkins D D, was an interested spectator during the sessions of the meeting. Batesburg sent quite a delegation to the State Baptist Convention at Gaffney. Dr. Wilkins, Dr E. C. Ridgell and Rev. N. N. Burton. They report a successful meeting and satisfactory progress all along the lines of work embraced in the convention. Rev. A. C. Walker is now absent at South Carolina Conference at Orangeburg. It is hoped he will bo returned to his people here, as be is an able preacher and a popular citizen. We have had several cases of sickoess in town lately, the severest case being this scribe, who has been confined to his bed with jaundice for Valine O^UIIO. Supt. Foster is working might and main to get the factory in operation. The whistle can naw be heard and is a pleasant sound to our ptop'e.
