Qiite a lengthy debate ensued participated iu by neaily every one present. It was finally decided to jeeist the pnjment and W. II. Sharps, R-q., was retained to defend udy suit for payment cf the goods which might be brought against the several B >ards cf Trustees. Thus ends Act II of the imposition. Attention is directed to the new adveitisement of P. C. Price & Co., of Columbia. This firm is satisfied j with the sales they have made since i in business and are dow seeking to extend its business by giving the best goods for the least money. Mr. West has been one of D-xington's most progressive and enterpiising citizens and his removal will be a severe blow to the county. We are consoled however, by the fact that he has left ties and interests behind that will bind him to his old home and associates. P*1 There are many persons who are under the impression that because they are maimed that they are consfquently exempt from paying the $l.(iO poll tax. This i9 not the case, as the law is very clear on this subject. It say3 that every male persoD between the ages of twenty-one and sixty is liable for the poll tax, "except those incapable of earning a support from beiDg maimed or from other causes, etc." Before a maimed person can be exempted he must take an oath that he is incapable of earning a support. The law now j makes the failure to pay the poll tux a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of $10 or imprisonment at bard labor upon the public works of the county not more than twenty days. Fair Warning. Parents and others are notified that no school books will be sold on credit. We have to pay cash for i them ourselves and the profit is so small that we are forced to adopt and strictly adhere to the cash system. This applies to one and all, eo it is needless for anyone to ask for credit in the purchase of school books.
