The Boer and the Uitlander storekeeper are two slr-wd p3rtie9 to sharp bargain as a i ule. The Boer annexes from the storekeeper, but the latter often plays it low down on the Boar. The story of how one of the prominent English South African millionaires made his first step on the ladder to fortune shows this: In tbe days when stor^9 were just the beginning of fortunes being made at the newly discovered diamond mines at Kimberly, he had a store in a little "Jorp" of less t ai a thousand people in Cape Colony. Tbe stories of big fortunes quickly made fired him with a desire to emulate. "When the Boers next brought in for sale their usual bales of wool, instead of settling with them at once, as was customary, put ihem off with the plea that he had not yet received the current market prices. Having got the wool safely away to the coast c he dispatched an accomplice on a curious errand. The accomplice would ride over to a farm, and after discussing with the old Bjer the condition of his veld, cattle, etc , for an hour or two, would, m tne uutcn fashion, then approach the real ob " ject of his visit by casually remarking, "That is a bad business about Mr. Johnson goiDg wrong." "Why, what's that you saj?" the Boer would reply. "Oh, haven't you heard? They say Johnson's affairs are in a very bad way, and he's expected to smash at any time." "Allmachetei!' gasps the Boer, "he's got a batch of my wool not paid for!" "If that is so," says the accomplice, "if I were you I would go and see about it at once." So in the course cf a few days Boer after Boer turned up at f Johnson's store, where their fears were affirmed; but each was told in confidence by Johnson: "Well, you know, I shouldn't like you, at any rate, to suffer, so just take anything you like from the store in settlement." It was a grand ruse, and the last Boer who cleared out with a wagon load ofjxyket handkerchiefs went away thankful that he hadTTitany rate, got something. After he had refused offers that increased $10,000 at a leap, day after day, he became tired and set a price, of $200,000, so that the syndicate would cease bothering him. It happened, however, that that particular property was a necessity for them, and they would have given twice as much. So they took him up in a twinkling. The court approved the sale, and the amount was then handed over in the form of certified checks. The shoemaker looked at the papers, found out from the banker that they were "good," and then said to the agent of the syndicate "Could you give me a part cash?" "Why, my man, you have it all in cash." "Yes, but I want some of it in? in?" "Currenc}?" "Yes, I guess that's it." ' Well, bow much do you wantr7 "I want about 50 cents. Curry suffered a vicious attack from her milch cow at her home in Fairview, Greenville county, recently and received serious and perhaps fatal injuries. Haley, of Oakway, OcoDee county, containing four mules and one horse, 5,000 to 0,000 bundles of fodder, two buggies and one set of harness, were burned up recently. Origin of the tire unknown, but supposed to be incendiary. Stories of wonderful corn crops are told ia all the Western States. Stalks from 12 to 15 feet high are common, but in Kay county, Okla , one stalk has been found that measures over 20 feet, beating the record made by a Texas stalk in 1808, which measured l!) feet and 4 inches. The stalk has been sent to Washington to compete for a place at the Paris exposition. Don't waste your time in regretting the lime ycu have wasted.
