The Lexington Dispatch Burned April 25th; rebuilt July * 19.1894. (x. M. HABMAN. Editor and Publisher. . * LEXINGTON, S. C.. WBrNFSDAY. 8EPTEMBEB 27. 1899. \ Mr Douglass Lowrance, who represents the wide-awake, progressive and deservedly popular firm of Lorick & Lowrance, of Columbia, is on the road in the interest of his Ii/miqo anrl wbilft in fnwn called to see us. He is, like bis father, Capt. W. B. Lowrance, a thorough business young maD, with vim and push about him which evidences a successful career. This firm has taken the right step to extend their business and building up Columbia as a jobbing market. We don't see why Columbia cannot command a large share of the busi ness of our county merchantp. Her business men are home folk, who help to bear a large share of the burden of State taxation and have aJwayB been very liberal in their contributions for public improvements and private enterprises tend ing to develop the resources of city and country, and coupled with is the fact that they sell goods as cheaply as can be purchased in aoy other market. They are, therefore, deserving of: the patronage of our mer chants and should receive it. Let us help those who help us and we will thereby be advancing our own interest. We hope other Columbia firms will follow the worthy example set by Lorick & LowraDce, and put representatives on the road and that they will receive the orders of not only the merchants of this county, but those of the surrounding counties. Solicitor Thurmond won the approval of all peace loving and lawabiding people for the able and consientious manner in which he discharged his unpleasant, arduous and trying duties during the last term of the Court of Sessions. The management of his cases was marked * with a thoroughness and completeness which impressed his hearers that he-was firm in his determination to do his whole duty regardless of consequences. His examination of witnesses was courteous and polite, his sole purpose evidently being to bring out the truth, the whole troth and nothing but the truth, whether that truth be for or against blm, thus making him an ideal prosecutor, instead of a persecutor as is often the case in some of our court houses Before a jury he is logical, clear and impressive, which makes him an in. * teresting speaker. We are glad to notice that he is pushing the payment of bonds which have beeD forfeited by reason of the failure of bailed persons to appear at the time specified. By pushing these payments he has recovered several hundred dollars that without this action would have been lost to the counties. On the whole he has made an excellent judicial officer. The mill men, merchants and business men of Greenville have set on foot a plan to increase the wheat acreage of that county which is worthy of being imitated by the roller mill men of this county. They will offer several prizes to be contested for by wheat growers, and the roller mill people have received two car loads of fine seed wheat which they will sell to farmers at a small profit and on easy terms. They will also store the crop for farmers free of charge and buy whenever the owners wish to sell, or use and pay wherever the owners are suited with the market Why caDnot our mercnantp, business men and rollor mill men jointly agree to offer prizes and provide seed wheat and storage for the crop so as to encourage the growing of wheat in this connty? The lands of the Fork and other portions " of the county are especially adapted to wheat growing and this crop will put money in circulation at a time of the jear when it is mostly needed for the purposes cf business, and will help all clases of citizens. The Columbia Evening It.cord favors the continuance of the beer privilges on the ground that of two j evils it is wisest to choose the least, i therefore to reduce the consumption ' _ 1 11 1 _ ! of wDisfcy, Deer armaing soouia oe encouraged. Without admitting or denying the soundness of its logic, our contemporary seemingly forgets or completely ignores the fict that beer can be sold from the dispensary with as much "encouragement'' as by beer privilege men. To use its argument with , stronger force that of two evils choose i the least why not use the dispensary 1 with its restrictions to "encourage beer drinking'' rather than by granting 1 | beer privileges as the least of the i two evil?? Admiral Dewey stole upon the New Yorkers as silently and unex- j , pectedly as he did upon the Spanish I J at Cavite, in the Philippines, on that memorable May morniDg and caught tbem, too, Dapping, having arrived ^ at Sandy Hook two days ahead of s time. i ' ^ ? To Road Ovorseers. To the Editor of the Dispatch: I desire to call the attention of road overseers to the fact that it is their duty to look after all bridges od their section and to keep them in good repair so as to prevent horses from getting their feet through holes on account of broken and rot teD planks. When a bridge gets in such a condition as to require my peisonal attention, the oveiseer should take enough interest in the welfare of the county and pride in the reputation of his section of being well kept as to notify me of the fact as soon as possible. By an act of the last Legislature it hi 8 b< en made encumbent upon me to look after the whole interest of the county, and it is impossible for me to get around to inspect the roads and bridges as often as I would like, and hence, in order that the county shall have the best possible service, I must insist that all the road overseers do their full duty as. laid down in the law so that the public will have no just cause to complain to me of the condition of the roads and bridges and every little culvert across a public road. When a bridge needs repairing, just get the lumber and repair it and be sure that you get good lumber. I would take ii as a favor if the public generally would assist me in pushing the overseers up to perform their whole duty. Overseers are instructed to see that owners of gates across a public road keep them in repair as re quired by law. The side ditches or drains passing through or by same gates kept open must by no means be permitted to be shut so as to dam the water and cause it to wash up the road bed. George H. Koon, County Supervisor. September 23rd, 1899. When a mother thinks she is going to die and rather wishes she could, what happens to the child? To the E iitor of the Dispatch: The cotton harvpstiog has bepn badly delayed by rainy weather, and some difficulty has been experienced from a scarcity of labor for the demand. Messrs. Mi89 L'zzie Knotts, from Koott's Mill community below here in Orangeburg county, ha9 gone to the Leesville College for the session. This is fVio tor?nnrl danohter of CaDtain w"v/ ?? ?-e ? - I Joseph E Kuotts, who is well known to many of the veterans of the Lost Cause. It is said on very good authority that the trustees have secured the services of Silas Hutto to teach the Swansea school next session and that Mrs. F. M. Hodge will be his assistant. Both selections are well received by the patrons and will meet the requirements as teachers for^ our children and as examples for their behavior and deportment. Silas is a graduate of Leesville College and is a youDg man of moral worth and good natured common sense and of genteel becoming decorum, which we are sure will commend him as an instructor in his new field. He has taught sufficiently before to learn him something of his duties and responsibilities. Mrs. Hodge is an educated, Christian lady of Georgia birth and culture. But then he has a good article to talk on and one that is of interest to every housewife?the best soap on the market. He finds that housewives wherever he has been are asking for those cakes of uBig Circus," because not only do they get a good deal for their nickle, but get the best, and quality counts in soap just as much as it does in a dress pattern?even more?for poor soap is positively injurious to fabrics, whether lineD, cotton or wooler; hence, dear at any price. * Bismark's Iron Nerve.
