It will be i art of the Cbarlestor, Augusta aDd Chattanooga railroad, application for a charter for which will shortly be made. The application for a charter will shortly be made to Secretary of State Cooper. Uuder the law, advertisement of the intention to app'y for a railroad charter must be made for thirty days in the papers of the counties through which it is proposed to run the railroad. Such advertisements will immediately be published and at the expiration of the thirty days the chailer will be asked for. The proposed "Charleston Air Line" will b? 125 miles long and will be capitalized at $3,125,000, or $25,000 to the mile. This route is about tweDty miles sboiter than the South eon railroad from Charleston to Augusta. B*rnwell is the largest town between Charleston aud Au gusta through which the new road will run. The Charleston, Augusta aDd Chattanooga railroad will be embraced in the Seaboard Air Line consolidation. In Georgia a-railroad will be built - from Augusta to Athens, which will connect the Charleston Air Line with the Seaboard's trunk line from the North to Atlanta. The tracks of that trunk line will be used between Athens and Atlanta by C. A. & C. R. R. Later the connection between Atlanta and Chattanooga will be completed. This nev( road will give Charleston a short and direct line to the coal, iron and mill districts of the West. Its consfruction will be rapidly pushed. The Seaboard is after business and will lose no time in completing the arrangements for getting it. Liter on the Seaboard will build from Columbia to Augusta, thus completing its system in this State and rmfctincr itself in nnnrlitinn fn complete for the business to Aiken and Augusta. . Eernaghaa. For 30 Years He Had Helped in Building Up Batesburg. - Special to The S'ate. . Batesburg, Aug. 24.?Mr. T. J. Kernaghan, one of the most prominent citizens of our town, died here yesterday afternoon after an illness of eight months. Mr. Kemanghan came here from Hamburg, some 30 years ago, when Batesburg was but a small railroad station. lie opened the second general merchandise store in the town, and from that time until his last illness has been one of our leading merchants. He always exhibited a | lively interest iu whatever affected | the prosperity of his town. Ia fact all fed that Batesburg has lost, if Lot the very best, at least one of hfr best friends. lu all public questions he took a decided stand, and with true courage, he was ever ready to defend his position. In every question of right and wrong his tnends and likewise those who disagreed with him, knew where to find him. Mr. Kernaghan was a Christain aud a most devoted member of the Methodist church. For a number of years he has been the efficient superintendent of the Sunday school. He will be sadly missed not only by his church, but by the entire community, j He was 55 years of age and leaves a : wife and six children, three sons and j three daughters. All of our citizens j feel the deepest sympathy for this j altlicted household. They have lost : their best friend, for he was a model j husband and a devoted father. He ' will be buried this afternoon from the Methodist church. He died in j the prime of life and yet his life j was a success aDd he sleeps in peace. - Big ills, as well as little ills of the | kidneys, cannot resist the curative power of Dr. Sawyer's Ukaiine. Mr. Brown, representing Jones & Co, the contractors. stat<s that the road bed is practically cornpitted except a short distance near Perry's, and at Cajee's on the erd (f the line. At both places difficulties hive been encountered which prevented the woik from being pushed j a* rapidly as at other places aloDg the line. On that portion of the road which | his been completed track laying will soon begin, and by November 15. Mr.Jones says the road to Perrj's will be ready for traffic. This is quick work, but the contractors weie under a bond to complete the rosd by that time or forfeit a thousand dollars a day for each day over the time. But the work is so well in hand that no forfeit will have to le paid. The contract for that end of the line has not been given out yet, but as the country is level the road probably can be built in time for next winter's business. Jones & Co, who had the Perry extension contract, will probably bid on this, too, but the firm has another contract for road building in Alabama, which they will begin in October. This, however, would not interfere with their building the Savannah extension, should the contract be secured. ???? ? Hampton Dukes, who weDt out to Kansas two weeks ago for a prisoner, gives U9 some very interesting and instructive information on the whiskey question ?aDd ever} body knows that what Hampie Dukes says on the question is the unyarnished truth without flutey, flounces or frills. He says that in prohibition Kinsas he saw the most gorgeous and magnificent bar rooms his eyes ever beheld; ai d that they were open day and nigh-, and were conducted in open and flagrant violation of the law, withe ut the least pretense to secrecy: that an occasional fine is imposed upon each bar-keeper, the aggregate fine amounting to about ?17 a week. This fine is virtually a license to sell. Of course, all these things were a surprise to him, and like a good missionary, Hampie went to preaching the virtues of a better system?a system which permits the purchasing of liquor only in the daytime, in sealed packages, and which offers none of the comforts and i 1 allurements 01 tue uarroom, wtiere treating and gambling go together. The result was startling and gratifying. The people wanted to know more of South Carolina's dispensary law, and friend Hampie Dukes has sent several copies of the law to offi cers and citizens of that State.'' And yet some good people in South Carolina, not deterred by what occurs in Kansas, Maine and other prohibition states, want prohibition tiied here. A Strong Fortification.
