Address, Allen S. Olmsted, LcRoy, N. Y. Batesbnrg Notes. To the Editor of the Dispatch: Hot and very dry is in everybody's mouth. It seems that vegefcatkn will be burned up if we don't soon have rain, and farm and garden can't last many days loDger, in fact, they aic about ruined already. The outlcoli is serious and how much we car stand of this sort cf thiDg will suor be learned. The smallpox business is a thinf of the past but it was not nearly a* bad as this drouth, aud I had rathei have the disease in the community than this dry spell, but the old say ing, the Lord knows bi st and wil provide for his people, is the onb consolation we hav*: work haid anc trust him and in the end all will b; right. Business is much more active thai could be imagined and appearance: around town would betoken goo( times. J. J. Bawl and Steadman Riley are erecting each a large tw< story brick buildiDg and three other will probably start eaily in tb< future, also J. B. Youngblood i: building a residence on Mitch* 1 Hill. Messrs. Duncan A: Kutlam have Ibeir ginnery Deaily compltted - and S. F. Berry, 11. K. Ta3lor an* J. F. Williamson have complete* new bcuies. besides probably otberi I don't recall now. All llitse goe; to show business is on a lirin basi: here. Several towns are giving up theii citizens who are casting thiir loti with us. We are glad to note Lex ington among them. M D. Hirtnai is now one of our progressive citizens He is handling the yard stick at J. J Rail's and seems to be peifectly ai home across the counter. Mrs. Har man is here also and we trust in i w few weeks tbe Misses Far Dan will be here. We extend a hearty wt'come to them. We are soon to have another LexiDgtonian, Jjhn J. Kami ner, who with his family will probably be located here by Christmas. A protracted meeting is in progress at tbe Baptist church. Dr. Key, of Greenville, a consecrated and able servant of the Mister, is doing the preaching. The body cf H. W. Johnson was exhumed last week and an dibit to get the bullets that was shot in him was made but with only partial success. T. J. Kernaghan and Mrs. Seaborn Jones are still quite uDwell. They i are suffering from paralysis. The annual election for the city fathers occurred today. Isaac Edwards was elected Iutendant. Tee ? tt o Ci w sc | wardens are xx. o. oicauuuan, ??. Hite, C A. Duncan and J M. Bates Notwithstanding the heat base ball ccntinues to be popular and our team is epoiliog for a hitch with some crack nine. The melon business is now on and large numbers of cars are handled through our town. Our people are alive to the importance of securing the S. A. L Rulway and we see no reason why it should not come this way on its route to Aiken. The faculty of the Institute has all been elected.and will soon be on the ground looking up the interest of the school. Some idea of the amount of businees done here can be inferred fvcm the fact that the railroad agent here now has three assistants and they can hardly keep up with their woik. Occasional. July 17, 18D9. No Home Should Be Without It. The August Number of The De lineator is called tne iuiasummer Number, and presents a complete analysis, by illustration and description, of all that is latest and most fashionable in the world of dress. The special articles of the magazine are characterized by a high literary tone, and the household, social and departmental discussions are on the usual distinctive plane of excellence. In this number appear two TurnPike Sketches, maiked by a delightfully quaint New England flavor. Beat*, tells the sweet, sad fctory of the first nun of California, who found relief from crushing sorrow by devotiog her life to others. Something of the halo of romance and mysticism that surrounds women of the East is dispelled in Veiled Women of the Orient. Girls' Interests and Occupations, forms a newsy f melange of pertinent notes and hints. Two sprightly home entertainments are embraced in A Psychological j Game, and A Proverb Party. Of j particular household value are the domestic subjects: The Children in Summer, Salads without Oil and Emergency Dinners, la addition is the enter taming and instructive monthly miscellanj: The departments fancy stitches and embroideries, social observances, by Mrs. Frank Learned, The Milliner, The Dressmaker, KoittiDg, Crocheting. Among the Newest Books, etc., etc. The Delineator is the Woman's Favorite Magazine, and is issued by the Famous Fashion Publishers, The Butterick Publishing Co, (Limited), at 7 to 17 West Thirteenth Street, New Y jrk, at the remarkably low rate of Si 00 for a year's subscrip tion, or 15 cents per copy.
