An Unexpected Response to a Request

Two gilded youths in New Orleans
encountered a friendless tramp at
the door of a saloon a3 they were
about to enter. They were in evening
dress, and as they observed the
wanderer in taPers, one offered him
a dime with which to purchase t4an

posed a treat for the 'Tlobo" if he ;
would make a speech. The tramp ;
assented. He tremblingly swallowed j
down the drink, and as the rich j
liquor coursed through his blood, he !
straightened himself and stood be- j
fore them with a grace and dignity j
that all his rags and dirt could not j

obscure.
"Gentlemen," he said, 11 look tonight
at you and at myself, and it j
seems to me I look upon the picture j
of my lost manhood. This bloated !
face was once as young and hand- j
some as yours. Tois shambling figure
once walked as proudly as yours,
a man in a world of men. I, too,
once had home and friends and position.
I had a wife as beautiful as j
an artist's dream, and I dropped the |
priceless pearl of her honor and re- j
spect in the winecup, and Cieopatralike,
saw it dissolve, and quaffed it j
down in the brimming draught. I j
had children as sweet and lovely as |
the flowers of spring, and I saw them j
fade and die under the blighting
curse of a drunkard father. I had a
home where love lit the flame upon
the alter and ministered before it,
and I put out the holy fire, and desolation
reigned in its stead. I had
aspirations and ambitions that soared
as high as the morning star, and I j
broke end bruised their beautiful
wings, and, at last, strangled them

The tramp ceased speaking. TLe

There was an excursion from Greenwood

Possibly the oldest woman living
in South Carolina is Mrs. Jane Crane,
who has just celebrated her 103rd
birthday near Eisley. She is quite
