i here are times of special danger
in the life of every woman. The
first occurs as she leaves girl-hood
behind. She may pass safely
through unassisted but if she becomes
pale and nervous at this
time, if she complains of headache
or backache and is tired out after
slight exertion she needs more
strength and more blood to tide
over this crisis in her life. The
story of Miss Lucy Phillips, Syracuse,
Ind., as told by her mother:
'// was two years ago that Lucy first
complained of the trouble which became
so serious with her. Her muscles continually
twitched, and the pale blcod
often went through her veins in jerks.
The case puzzled our physician, and
twice he called in counsel. She continued
to grow worse. One day a neighbor
brought in a box of Dr. Williams'
Pink Pills for Pale People, and we gave
them to Lucy. She soon regained her
flesh, the color came back to her cheeks,
her blood was purified by the medicine,
and her nerves became strong as ever.
The physician agrees with us that she
was cured by Dr. Williams' Pink Pills
for Pale People.

A Mysterious Killing
The news of the assassination cf
Mr, W. Pat Bowers, a well known
and prosperous farmer who resided
in Piney "Woods section of this
county, over in the Fork, which occurred
at the Old Gite place, neer
Bennett Prick's on the Bush river
road, last Saturday, about 1 o'clock
in the afternoon at the hands cf nD
unknown party. Mr. Biweis had
been to Little Mountain for the pur:
pose of transacting his regular business
and was returning to bis home
in this county in his buggy when he
met his tragic and untimely end.
From what can be learned from
the meagre accounts of tho deplorable
f.ITnr it seems that when Mr.
Bowers reached a pine thicket on the
road, and about two miles frc-m Lis
borne, some one from the road side
fired a load of No. 2 shot, which took
tfleet in the body of Mr. Bowers.
It is said that a negro, who was I
living neaiby beard someone exclaim, i
"O, Lord.'' Mr. Bowers was shot
three times, in his back, thigh and
hips. It is supposed that after the
assassin fired the first shot Mr.
Bowers fell from hie buggy and the
assassin deliberately walked up to
the prostrate form and fired two
more shots, as his head, neck, ] iw,
shoulder and shirt were powder
stained which showed tbit they
must have been fired at close range
and in corroboration of this theory
two empty shells were found near
where the body cf the murdered
man lay. There was only one track
discernable in the immediate vicinity
of the murder, which naturally leads
to the supposition that only one person
committed the deed. It is also
supposed that the first shot took
effect in Mr. Bowers' thigh, some of
the shot passing through the dash
board, and some hitting the horse,
which caused it to whirl and run
away and was caught by Mr. Frick,
who, thinking that something had
befallen his friend, had his horse
saddled and started out to investigate, with
the result of finding the
bullet riddled and terribly maDgled
body of Mr. Bowers at the place
mentioned above.
Magistrate Sweetenberg summon
ed a jury of inquest, who a't^r hearing
all the evidence then obtainable,
returned a verdict that W P. Bowers
came to his death frcm gun shot
wounds at the hands of parties unknown
to the jury.
Mr. Bowers had friends as well as
enemies in the neighborhood id which
he resided, but suspicion as yet rest
upon no one. He was about
years of age and leaves a wife and
several children. His funeral took
place Sunday at St. Peters, (Piney
Woods) church, Rev. A. R B - ck offi
dating and his remains were interred
in the cemetery therewith connected
The Thief Was Caught.
A negro imposter, who has been
playiDg upon the sympathy cf the
charitubly disposed of his race by
pretending to be deaf and dumb and
thus made a living departed from
the straight and narrow way, and
appropriated to his own use the
gocds and chatties of his benefactois
without their consent or knowledge.
At this place he stole several articles
of value from the home of Boston
Battles, with whom he stopped, while
sojourning in this place. After his
departure from this place to greener
pastures and pleasanter stream?, the
theft was discovered and the police
authorities of Columbia were immediately
notified to keep a sharp lock
out for the light fingered gentleman,
which they did and the result was
hat he was arrested in that city.
When the startling discovery was
made that he was neither deuf nor
dtmb, Lutfcad successfully played
tleliickupcn Lis own color and!
race. He was turned over to Migis- |
trate Koon at Brookland, who gave
him 30 days on the chaiu geng.
When this sentence is satisfied he
will be held to answer to other
charges of a similar nature.
