Dogs Are Property.
The dog, "the yellow dog," if you
>!ease, or any sort of dog, is on top
igaio. The Supreme Couitof South
Carolina is on his side. The Supreme
lourt holds that a dog has value and
an be stolen aDd that the old romuon
law is out of dale and the mod
rn dog is entitled to legal protection;
,nd if you steal a dog you can be
ent to prison. The case was started
a X-jwbury, where a Dfgro named
jangford was charged with stealing
dog, dog house, etc. The Circuit
udge held, according to the common
law, that a dog wis not the sublet
of iarceny and quashed the inlictmcnt.
Now the Supreme Court
inanimously holds that the ccramon
iw does not apply h<rf: that it is
rroug not to value a dog simply beause
be is not edible, and that it is
ot a whim or captice to keep a dog. j
'he Court defends the dog for de- j
otion and attachment, and contends j
bat it is entirely a punishable crime I
j steal a dog, and that the stealing
f a dog may be punished if the ;
rets warrants and the indictment be i
roperly drawn. The Circuit Cjurt
; reversed on the d >g demurrer. ;
Succsss of Clemson College.
Jo tbe Editor of The News and Coarier:
During the greater part of the last
year Clemson has been under the
management of Dr. Hartzog. If
material results are to be takeu as
evidence, Clemson has gotten a man
at its head who is fully capable of
managing it. This is a big j ib, and
unless there is unusual executive
ability something will go lacking.
The Third class has ju3t lift the
College to take up various lines of
work. Seventy-niue alumni have
gone out from Clemson?three classes
having graduated. Many of tlnte
young men weut back to the farm,
many are at work in electrical woiks,
or as draughtsmen. They seem to
do wtl), and as to Clemson's past,
there is nothing to complain of.
Let us see what the future points
to. During the past year over four
hundred men have attended College,
the freshman class is larger than it
has ever been, and during the year
the president was forced to discourage
young men from entering the
Cdlege.
The Textile School has been running
practically all the year, about
thirty students taking the course.
This is one of the most interesting
features of the College, and South
Carolina and Clemson can look for
material results from this department.
The mechanical department is doing
good woi k, and great interest is
taken by the students in mechanics.*
This is evidenced by the boys spending
their Saturdays doing woik in
the shopand makiDg motors, book
cases, etc., for themselves.
All the students who come here
are loval to the C -liege, and there is
aa abundance of College spirit
among the bo}S.
The record in athletics in College
organizitions and in literary societies
duriDg the past year is very enviable.
God-speed to Clemson in
her field of woik
If the schools of the State would
forget to be envious, and work
together for the purpose of uplifting
the State,, how much better all
would get on. Let them help one
another!
All have their respective fields to
work in, and .the only rivalry should
be to vie with one another in fitting
men for their professions aloDg the
different lines.

Why Women Cannot Enter
Masonic Lodges.
When King Solomon was still a
young man he had married his seventh
wife. She was a beautiful
young Ammonites?, with locks as
black as the raven's wing and eyes
as bright as the eagle's. It was be
lieved tint she was the favored fair
one among all the sultanas of the
Great King; for bis affections were
not divided then as they afterward.3
became. She knew ber power, and
used it unsparingly. In addition to
her other qualities, she was inquisitive
as ever was a woman on this
earth.
One eveuing King Solomon attended
lodge on some grand occasion,
and stayed out somewhat late.
When he returned home he found
the fair Ammonitess in the dumps,
and pouting just like the dear wives
of Masons do sometimes now when
their lords stay out too late at the
Lodge. She upbraided him with
neglecting her, insinuated that he
hadn't been to the lodge as he pretended,
and insisted that in- future
he should give proof that he went
there by having herself initiated, so
that she might go there and watch
him.
' Daughter of Amnion," replied the
King, "thou bast behaved thyself as
ODe of the foolish womeD,"' in pr<8umiDg
to question thy lord and
mrster. Thou art not so angry with
me as thou pretendest to br: for the
true reason of this behavior is thy
insa'iablv cuiiosity, in which thou
excellent Eve herself. Know then
that I here ordain that neither thou,
nor aDy of thy inquisitive s<x after
thee, ever enter the portals of
Masonic Lodge; but I ehall erj in
the Tyler io pierce through with his
sword any woman that shall attempt
? i " 11 _____ A 1_ _
to enter a luugf; aye, evfn tote,
Queen of Isreal though thou be!1'
And that ordinance of this wisest of
monarchs has continued in force till
this day.
We hop3, now, that we have satisfied
the curiositv of our fair readers
as fully as d:d King Solomon that of
i bis Queen.
