Stuart Departed this transitory life on the raorniDg of June 8:b, 1S99, in the 78th year cf his age, after a long and ] painful illness. He was born in An- ; derson county, N. C., but moved to < this place when quite joung, where he married Miss Rebecca Corley, , and resided here up to the time of ! his death. j Several years ago he received a paralytic stroke from which he never , recovered and confined him to his , home for the balance of his days on earth. He bore his sufferings uncomplaingingly and no murmur ? A few days before the end came he received a fall while attempting to get out of bed and 4he shock to his nervous system, together with his feeble condition probably hastened the end, as from that moment he gradually began to sink. As peacefully aDd as gently as a babe sleeping upon its mother's bosom he closed his eyes to the sufferings and sorrows of this life and passed into the unseen and unknown life beyond the shadows of the grave. The funeral services were conducted at the late residence of the di ceased by the lie vs. YT. M. Harden and "VY. Kanf mann. Hon. E. L. Asbill, of Leesville, successfully conducted the defense of Messrs. Sons and Cooke, and by his searching examination of the witnesses and his logic and eloquence got a verdict of acquittal. Mr. Jake W. Shumpert, one of the best millwrights we have, called I to see us Monday, and said he in{ tended to kill a delinquent by knocking him in the head with a silver dollar, which he did. He was found guilty but went out repicing. The Lexington Manufacturing Company are preparing to increase their steam motive power, they are now putting in a new boiler and as soon as this is placed, will put in another, making in all four boilers. Dr. A. B. Drafts has stood a very successful and highly creditable examination before the North Carolina Medical Board. It is probable that he will locate at Hendersonville, N. C, for the purpose of practicing his profession. One of the neatest and prettiest stores in town is that one kept by Mr. J. J. Taylor, successor to Boozer & Boozer. Not only is this so, but he keeps the best groceries, dry goods, shoes, etc, that can be found anywhere. Mr. B. L. The Jane term of our Cuu?'fc of General Sessions was convened here Monday morning with Judge O W. Buchanan presiding. The first case tried was the State against George Duncan, charged j with breach of the peace of a LigL and aggravated nature, on the streets in the town of Lccsville. The defendant was represented by Mr. F F. Sirother. The verdict was guiity and the sentence thirty days or thirty dollars. John Alferd charged with bnach of trust was discharged. The en and iurv threw out the case against Jesse Lee, for assault and [ battery; John Pound, P?utler Pound and Charley Corley. rio': J as. AL?wine, violation dispensary law: Frank Moorer. violation dispensary law. Will Peel charged with piivily stealing from the person, was represented by Mr. W. II. Sbarpe. This case has been before the court several terms. The defendant was acquittc d D. L. Miller, charged with the murder of Miss L'.lla Viola Fpting, near LittleMoantaiD,March 18th las', was placed upon his trial. He was represented by Efird ?!c Dieher. The trial was short and resulted in an acquittal. L Asbill represented the defendants. It will be remembered that Jesse Hill was hung for this crime last fall, and his father i9 now in the penitentiary for life. The last trial was had yesterday afternoon with case against Will Martain, charged with assault and battery with intent to kill. Mr. Asbill represented the prosecution and J. B. Wingard the defense. The verdict was not guilty. The ease against Izlcr and Bill Jefcoat for violation of dispensary law was again continued: W. W. Bafton, forgery, continued: Azariah Taylor, forgery, continued: Will Davenport, obstructing a railroad, continued; Joel I. Harsey, violation of dispensay law, continued; Jtfl' Jackson and Unas Hooker, adultery, continued. John Boyd, a negro, and the only prisoner in jail, is stil there, nothirg having been done with him. The constables at court were Ezra Snelgrove, Lee HarmaD, P. H. Cbrley, J. W. Fry, T. S. Hirman and Frank Wingai d. PRESENTMENT OF THE GRAND JURY. To the Hon. The Circuit Cjurt for said county and State. We, the granu jury for said county, beg leave to make the following presentment: 1. We have passed upon all bills of indictment handed out by the Solicitor and have returned the same to the court with our findings thereon. 2. We have been informed that one John Wade Seay and one Jane I Wessinger are now living in adultery and we herewith hand in enclosed envelope the names of witnesses for the use of the State in the investigation of the same. 3. At our last court we, iu our ! presentment, asked the County Supervisor to meet the grand jury at this term of the court for the purpose of showing the costs and expense of keeping up the county chain gang. This same request was made by the former grand jury at September court for 1898. Neither of these requests have been complied with. As this is a very important matter to the people of the county, we ask that the court pass such order as will cnmnell the said Supervisor to comply with our request. 4. We have examined the poor house property and find every thing in good shape, aEd inmates well cared for and satisfied. 5. We find that the repairs recommended to the j ail in our last pre- ! sentment have been made. G We find that the repairs recom- j mended to the court house iu our I last presentment have been made ex- j cept the protection by way of a rail- j ing in the Treasurers office, which | we understand will be attended to I before the next collection of taxes. j 7. We have appointed a special j committee to investigate the county i offices and the business pertaining to ! them, and we ask that the county officers be prepared to make a full j showing whenever I hey convene for such examination.
