The recent drought put the farm ers of the county ' in a bad row of stumps/' In some sections of the cour t-. farming operations were entirely suspended, it being too dry to plant and the land too hard to plough. The publication cf the County Treasurer 8 annual report takes up much of our space this week. It is, however, interesting reading matter and shows the taxpayers how much of the public money has been spent, for what purpose and to whom it was paid. Dr. Smcak, a dentist from Bamberg, is in town with a view cf locating here for the practice of his profession. We trust that be will decide to locate among us. He certain ly can find no better place in the State to live. Columbia is to have big times on June 20 2*2, when her firemen will give a big firemen's tournament. A tremendous crowd of visitors is ex pected and preparations are being made for their entertainment. We understand that Mr. Mc. A portion of the township bonds issued to aid in the construction of I he Columbia, Newberry and Laurens Riilroad, will fall due on July 1st, and they will be paid, together with the jnterest on the railroad bonds b\ the County Treasurer, Mr. J. S. Derrick, on and after that date. We learn that Mr. John Culler, who works a turpentine farm in Sandy Run, had the misfortune to fall in a vat of hot rosin last Wednes day and was painfully burned. I> is thought that the amputation of si irm will be necessary. We hope th^ report is greatly exaggerated and bis injuries will not prove near so severe is it is said they will. Mrs. Oilin Wannamaker, wb< m ved with her husband from their borne in Sandy Run to Brookland -ometime ago, died in that town last Saturday. Her remains were con veyed to SaDdy Run for interment Sunday. She was a high toned Christian lady and her death is deeply deplored by those who knew her. There is talk among railroad peo pie that it is the intention of the Sf aboard Air Line people to make Swansea the Florida connection of their system. The idea is to build a road from Cimden to Swansea and connect with the Florida Central and Peninsular road at the latter place. If this is accomplished it will be a big thing for Swansea. Is there not a law upon the statute book requiring the Board of County Commissioners to place mile post on all public roads and pointers {laced at all folks and cross roads? If there is, the provisions of the act should be immediately complied with. It can be done by the chain gaDg very cheaply and at only a little loss of time. Mack Suber, a well known and highly respected colored man, died at his home on M*jor H. A. Mee'ze's place, near the depot last Sunday aftemocn. He had been in ill heahh for sometime. Mick so conducted himself as to wiu the respect aDd esteem of the whites hereabouts with whom he was popular. He leaves a large family. His remains were cnterrod last Monday iu the buiying ground connected with New Bethel A. M E., church. Willie XLettze, charged with killing young Cartledge in Columbia, some months ago, and confined in Richland j lil awaiting bis secoud trial, mrde application yesterday afternoon before the Supreme Court for bail, setting forth ''that his condition of heal.h i3 such as to demand his liberation upon bond." Gov. Eilerbe has been officially notifi d of outrages iu Orangeburg county committed against persons who testified against the alleged moonshiners The bonus of Mrs Ann B. Jefcoat and W. X Am? belli ive beeu visited by unknown parties and both houses riddled with bullets. Both these parties are both .State and Federal witnesses against th. moonshiners. The Governor hub offered a reward of ?lU0 for the appiehension and conviction of the parties who were in the crowd. Frightened Horse. While Mrs. Dr. F S. Earle, hei mother, sister and a little child, of Columbia, were returning from hei Dusband'a farm in this county, the horse became unmanageable whil? uearing the Broad river bridge, and made a dash across the bridge. Oj arriving at the home of Mr. Ho!zhauser, on the Rtchlmd side, th?horse shied and the vehicle struck Mr. Holzbauser's fence, demolishing it and throwing the occupants out Mrs. Earle and Mrs. Miller we.e both picked up with broken limbs, *r:? *r:n? ? n?A iiiifeo uiiii'juicvi ttuu the little child was tossed high iu the air, but comiDg down in a sand bed, was not hurt. Mar u dock at Peak, and sentenced for 1 e t in tbe penitentiary is now a free man c ag tin after languishing in jail for abor 15 months. Last Monday he t was notified that Governor E lerbe c had favorably considered his petition i for pardon and had granted his prayer. Tbe proper papers were v served on the proper officers and Mr. L Summer was liberated that after- c noon. Since his conviction bis attorney, t Col. George Johnstone, and his r friends and relatives have worked with unflaging devotion to have him c pardoned. His petition contained the g names of about three thousand per- c sons, residing in this, Newberry and ? Fairfield counties, among whom weie i some of our best known citizens. 1 The ladies of the neighborhood in ? which Mr. Summer resided joined n t the effort in his behalf and lent valuable and effective services. A ? majority of the jurors who sat at the j trial signed the petition as did the \ presiding Judge, who endorsed the justness of the request by say ii g ( "that the prisoner undoubtedly had thegreatest provocation for the deed." ( The petitioners asked for the pardon j as a simple act of justice and with ' ( such a strong petition Governor J Ellerbe could not have turned a !
