The Lexington Dispatch : . i Burned April 25th; rebuilt July 19. 189-4. G. M. HARM AN. Editor and Pub'isher. LEXINGTON, S. C.. W31NcSD\y, MAY 3. 1899. Notes of Travel. To the Editor cf the Dispatch: Late in the afternoon of March 31st. I bid adieu to Madison, Fia , after a stay of three weeks amoDg these kind people. One feels loath to leave them, perhaps, never again to meet tbem in this life. We spent a night at Jacksonville and one in vjiuuiuia, auu couj uuuuaj mviu* ing we arrived at Bitesburg and took the Carolina Midland, and at sunrise Sunday morning, April 2nd, fjund me home again after seven weeks' absence. Now, Mr. Editor, if you never have left home this long, y >u could scarce imagine how happy you would be to meet loved ones who were anxiously awaitiDg your return and, to say the least of it, there is still no place like home, yet, it does a fellow good to be away sometimes, and see how other folk get along. It helps to keep the blues off and learn him not to grumble at the table and at the noise of the children and mmy other things be so often does. - Sorry to say the fruit crop will be very short; and the blackberries are all killed; yet we hope for huckleberry pie and bonev, and fiom the soft breeze, warm and genial sunshine, and the opening bloom and buzz of the ever busy bee we feel sure summer is nigh. The farmers are very busy planting their crops, and the health and prosperity of our community, we trust, are on the upward tendency. It was our privilege to be at the organization of a large Sunday school last Sabbath, at Hulon academy. "With your scribe as Superintendent and many willing hands to help on in this glorious work you may expect to bear from us in the near future. The grain crop, though rather thin is lookipg fine. The f&rmers^enerally are planting a fair watermelon acreage and with the help of a kind providence we hope to be able to lest under our own vine and fig tree when the leaves hav9 again withered and faded. G. M Adams. T? . u. o n *^_:i o.-> i onn JL?il(.CBUUI g, .J- \J , npi! 44, JLOt7?7> ^ *" " * Many old soldiers now feel the elfects of the hard service they endared.during the war. Mr. Geo. S. AadersoD, of Rossville, York county, Peon., who saw the hardest kind of service at the front, is now frequently troubled with rheumatism. "I had a severe attack lately," he says, "and procured a botile of Chamberlain's Pain Balm. It did so much good that I would like to know what you would charge me for one dozen battles." Mr. Anderson wanted it both for his own use and to supply it to his friends and neighbors, as every family should have a bottle of it in their home, not only for rheu nudism, but lame back, sprains, swellings, cuts, bruises and burns, for which it is unequalled. Tbe Augusta Herald says "Old Jim Crow," of Chawrosum, Ga, is a t i - -i ? p-mu&upuer m uis way, ana down 'taere under the shade of the trees he h^s been holding an Academy. He teaches by sarcasm, but it's all the same if he gets there, and his latest contribution to the common good is veil calculated to do that same. He is the enemy of the overproduction of cotton, and started to organize a society to further his ends. He addressed a circular to faithful, which reads as follows: "Yes, 'whoop 'em up, and let it come. Haul out the guano and buy ail the mules you possibly can. Get some merchant to 'run you.' Plant cotton all over creation, between your watermelon rows, in missiDg places in the corn; plant the garden just.as soon as the vegetables are off. Put it in the fence corners, and around wherever you can 'stick' a hill in your wife's flower garden. Y'es, plant cotton 'world without end.' Make it so Jow that a fellow won't pick it if you give him what he gathers, and furnish him 'free hash' while he picks. Go it boys, 'go it while you're young' for when you get old you can't raise it. But, one consolalation; when you can no longer jine the boys in the job of keeping on a first class case of poverty deb', and bankruptcy for the country, you can put in your contribution to the general ruin as a first class calamity bowler. Cut I this out and keep it for 'ready refer- j euce' all through the year. Dun t go to bed tonight without calling up all the children, with their mother and : reading this to tliem.
