Miss Carrie Piice, whose parents

Mr. R. A. iiarr iias brought to this
office a sample of long food which
had been cut in his shredding machine,
which he has just purchased
this year. He is well pleased with
the experiments so far made and
says cattle and stock prefers food in
this condition to fodder cured in the
old way. His experience is that
there is not near the loss in corn by
shelling and otherwise as there is in
first pulling the fcdder.
A petition has been numerously
signed asking Governor Ellerbe to
commute the sentence of Jess Hill, a
negro who is to be hanged Friday
for the murder of Mary Lybraud, to
life time in the penitentiary. There
is a stroDg feeling throughout the
county favorable to Hill. The concensus
of opinijn being that, as long
as the father, who was convicted
with the son for the same crime had I
received a life time sentence, the son
should have received the same sentence.

ago Dr. J. K. Ivneece so long and so
favorably known to our people,
passed away, lie bad well neigh
reached the eightieth mile stone in
the journey of life, and every \ear
bad been one of useful activity, born
November 12, ISIS, he overcame adversity
and succeeded when numbers
more advantageously situated
than he, had ignortiniously failed.
It can be truly said that the 7th of
November ended the life of the most
remarkable man that this section has
ever produced. Like the great Napoleon
he did not wait for events to '
carry him forward, but created
events by his indomitable fortitude
and perseverance and thereby became
for over half a century tbe most intellectual
and prominent man in cur
community. As to his services as
practicing physician where lie h Id
front rank for fifty years, and as
minister of the gospel, farmer, husband
and father, I will leave for one
much more competent than myself
to more fully setforth in an extended
obituary that will soon be written
for your columns.
Misfortunes never ccme singly and
we are again called upon to mourn
the departure of friends. Only this
morning the sweet and gentle spirit
of our nearest neighbor, Mrs. S. P.
Derrick, left for its final rest. She
was, daughter of Maik Shealy, formerly
of the Folk, but for many years
an exemn'.arv citizen of Saluda
I
count}-. Mrs. Derrick left a husband
and three small children to mourn
her untimely loss. In the early
years cf womanhood she has been
called to her reward, possessed of
every trait of character that could
( ndear her to f imily and friends. We
are want to exclaim, why was she
removed from her loved ones, when
there was so much good for her to
do and when she was so willing to
pei form her part and m ire. .She
will be buiifd in the cemetery at j
