The Lexington Dispatch Burned April 25th; rebuilt July 19. 1894. ? < G. M. HARMAN, Editor and Publisher, i LEXINGTON, S. C., WEDNESDAY. OCTOBER 19. 1898. ? j The appearance of "White Jack" in the fever stricken districts cf the South, is the signal for the retreat of "Yellow Jack." The candidacy of Mr. A. Jones of Newberry, for United Statps Senator is regarded by a majority of tbe State preBs as a huge joke. Five men were killed aod eleven injured bv an explosion of gas in collierv No. 8, 8t Coaldale, nearTamqua, Pa., on October 13th. It is said that the Spaniards turned over the Island of Porto Rijo to Undo Sam yesterday, and Old Glory now floats over the Island. The Evening Record says that the present Indian troubles in Minnesota appears tobe based, as many others have been, on violation of the agree-ments made by the United States. | Most recent troubles have come from j invasion by whites of land which had been set apart for Indians. The campaign of Van Wyck, the Democratic nominee for Governor of New York, has been opened under favorable auspices. Notwithstanding that Teddy Roosevelt, the Republican nominee, is working the Rough Rider racket for all it is wcrtb. Van Wyck stands a good chance of being elected. "We are indebted to the Hon. Stanyarne "Wilson for a copy of his beau tiful eulogv on the late Senator Joseph H. Eirle, delivered in the House of Representatives on Saturday, April 23, 1890. It is a fine tribute to the worth aDd memory of a noble and true man. It is Raid that North Carolina is in a pitiable condition. . It ift suffering from negro dominition and presents a humiliating picture to the civilization of the nineteenth century. Senators Tillman and Daniel have been invited aDd have accepted the invita- [ tion to help the white people throw off the negro yoke snd come out from under political bondage. With their assistance victory is assured. Another Richmond is in the field and proposes to contest for Senator Tillman's official scalp. It is announced that Col. L. W. Touman's of Barnwell, the man recently identified with the movement to reduce the cotton acreage, will make the race for United States Senator. A. C Jones, Chairman of the late so-called Prohibition movement, has already announced his candidacy and it is said there will be others announced for this office as the campaign draws nearer. Yet, notwithstanding these reports, Senator Tillman is losing no sleep over the matter, but is pursuing the even tenor of his way work ing for the best interest of the State he so ably represents. ' I Leesville Notes. To the Editor of the Dispatch: Delightfully cool weather. Students continue to come in to ! the college. Mrs. H. C. Barr, recently of Thompson, Ga., recognizing the superior advantages offered by our towD, has moved here and opened a beautiful line of milinery and fancy goods. We are glad to welcome Mrs. Barr among us, wishing for her the success that one of her push and energy deserves. Notwithstanding the low price of cotton we are getting our share of the crop that is being marketed, j We get cotton for twenty miles in every direction. Mr. Oxner reports that he has ground 5,000 bushels of wheat this ! season. Guess what young man promised his best gill, before she went away not to wear his new suit, not to cut off his hair and, last but not least, j not to keep company with any of the fair sex until her return. I Oct. 15. Sol. ^ I Items from Headers Store. To the Editor of the Dispatch: Many of our farmers are about through gathering their crops. Corn is a fair crop; peas are not so good; J cotton will make an average: rice is very good. It will fully double cot- J ton in value. Potatoes is generally a poor crop. Some say the- vineless potato is good but your scribe happened to get the potatoless vines ! this year. Sore eyes are very fashionable in our neigbboihood, otherwise health I is very good. Od Saturday last our settlement had a day of enjoyment and pleasure ; at the close of Prof. M. C. Hallman's singing school. Word was given out that there would be a basket dinner and all who would come, was welcome, so the neighborhood turned i ? out with well filled baskets and a ' few visitors from a distance. All seemed to enjoy the day. An organ was furnished by a neighbor and we listened to some very good music until about 1 o'clock, when all were invited to go out and take some free ? i mi . i * lemonaae. xnen uiuuer was ?u- i nounced, a blessing asked by Mr. W. F. Bachman, and all hands fell in and ate a plentiful dinner cf of good things, which all seemed to enjoy. After dinner all returned to the church and Lawyer Sharpe gave the school and crowd a good lecture, I polished it off with some of his side splitting ancedotes which was greatly j enjoyed. Prof. Hallman met the : class again Sunday morning and j sang pretty well all day. He gave them a short but good lecture, ad- j vised the class to meet often and practice which they agreed to do : in 1 chose Messrs. D. O. Spires aDd M. L. Bachman as leaders. All I parties praised Prof. Hallman and the class for the improvement they have made in singing. Dr. Piece's Favorite Prescription is a wonderful medicine for women who suffer in this way. It does away with the necessity for these trying ordeals, and may be used in the privacy of the home. It acts directly on the delicate organ* concerned, and makes them strong, vigorous and healthy. It banishes the discomforts of the expectant period and makes baby's advent easy and almost painless. It transforms weak, nervous, petulant invalids into happy wives and mothers. Thousands of women have testified, over their own signatures, to this fact. The "Favorite Prescription" may be procured from any good medicine dealer. Any woman who will write to Dr. R. V. Pierce, Buffalo, N.Y., may have the advlee of an eminent and skillful specialist without charge. Mrs. Cora M. F. i ... "I can't see how any family lives without Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy," says J. R Adams, a well known druggist, of Geneva, Ala., in a letter inquiring the price of a dozen bottles, that he might not ody have it for use in his own family, but supply it to his neighbors. The reason some people get along without it, is because they do not know its value, and what a vast amouDt of sufferiDg it will save, j Wherever it becomes known and i used it is recognized as a necessity, for it is the only remedy that can always be depended upon for bowel complaiots, both for children and : adults.
