Gilmer county court, tells briefly his
experience with an epidemic of
bloody flux in his family. He writes
under date of October 8, 1896, at
Auburn, W, Ya. "During the past

Gen. Merritt Sails.
San Francisco, June 29.?The
speedy steamer Newport, bearing
Major Geu. Wesley MerriU, millitary
governor of the Philippines and his
staff, besides the Astor light battery
and Cos. H and K of the Third
United States artillery and detachments
from the signal corps sailed
today for Manilla.
The Newport will make an effort
to overtake the third fleet of transports,
which sailed on Monday, after
the fleet reaches Honolulu, where
the vessels will coal and take on
fresh supplies before proceeding to
Manila. Gen. Merritt is very anxious
to avoid an encounter with any
vessel of the Spanish navy and will
issue orders to the fleet at Honolulu
to make all possible speed.
Gen. Merritt goes to assume his
duties as governor general of the
Philippine islands. He has prepared
a proclamation, which will be
issued immediately after his arrival
at Manila.
Although its contents are as yet
kept secret its general tenor is known.
It will announce to the people of the
islands that Gen. Merritt, as the representative
of the United States, has
established a provisional government
and his authority must be respected.
At the same time he will assure the
inhabitants that he comes not to opi-v?*aoq

be granted the fullest liberty compatible
with the preservance of law
and order, and all peismal and
property rights are to be respected.
He has instructions from Washington
to confer with Admiral Dewey

insure the occupation of the islands
by this government.

On Saturday during the heavy
thunder storm at Greenwood, Mr. F.
Ji. Cobb's residence was struck, con
siderable damage being done. A
number of people were in the house
at the time but no one was injured.
The lightning also paid its respects
to the cotton mills, a bouse being
struck at the Greenwood at two at
Grendel Mills.

Yorkville went on a pieDic excursion
