James MeCloude and James Hartley, while fisting for "mud fisb,v in the North Edisto, a short while ago hooked and captured a moostrous alligator,after a desperate and thrilling struggle. The monster was hooked in the fore leg, but before it could be shot, broke loose. Determined to safely laud their game, Mr. Hartley grabbed it by the leg and held him while Mr. MeCloude ended the struggle by putting two riflle balls in the alligator's body. He measured seven feet and nine inches and weighed two hundred pounds. ? . Closing Exercises. The closing exercises of ihe Lexington Classical Institute last night in the court house were witnessed by an oveiflowiDg house, in fact the court house was packed and jammed with the frimds of the school and the pupils. The program was varied and interesting and each pupil showed careful training and did credit to their instructors and themselves. "We exceedingly regret tfcat want of time and space will not permit us to give this pleasing and enjoyable occasion a more extended notice. Suffice to say that it was a complete success in every particular, and everybody went away well pleased. Working for Jesus. Mr. Frank F. Whilden, of Charleston, Field Secretary of the South Carolina State Sunday School Association gave two interesting and instructive lectures in the Methodist church last Sunday, and captivated his large and appreciative audiences by his pleasing address and his clear aDd comprehensive remarks. Mr. "Whilden is engaged in an important church work and is an earnest and enthus:astic worker. He is now laboring with a view of organizing a Sunday school convention for this county. We believe that the proposed convention is to be interdenominational and it therefore commends itself to the Sunday school superintendents and teachers of all Christian denominations. He should meet with the hearty co-operation t f all who desire to see the work of the Lord prosper. A New Fruit Market. One day last week a negro landed at this j lace who was sai l to have been just out of the pest house i:i Columbia. He is said to have had every evidence of having had tho small pox and those who saw him were shocked aud given a scare. The negro was given to understand in an unmittikuble way ihal his room was preferable to his presence and was made to return from whence he came. We have been informed by Iuten dant Wiugard that he has instruct* d to permit 120 suspicions characters to enter the town and inform all such to move on. Failing to do this he ielotbed with the authority to escort them to the limits of the town and to tell them not to stand upon their <>rder of going, but to go at once. Our people cannot be too careful in allowing strangers to linger about i heir premises. Small pox is a loathsome disease, the germs cf which can be carried from place to place in the clothing and a due regard for tlm ' health of one's own family, if not tin t of his neighbor's should induce them to be very careful in this respect. L the disease should once get a foot hold here there is 120 telling how many victims it would claim before it could be eradicated. A Prcmicir.d Yctmg Life Sens Cm. Life is like a beautiful flower: yesterday it was a tender bud full of blight promises, today it is full blows, shedding the richness of <ts perfume for the pleasure and happiness of all, and tomorrow it fades, withers and dies and its dead petals are scattered by the four winds of heaven. A sacred writer once said that in the midst of life we are in death and we are daily reminded of the truth of this when the cold and unfeeling banc! of death is laid upon the form of some loved one and claims it as its victim From nearly every home there is some va cant chair; some loved voice is bushed and we mourn for the nre-ence of one I who was, but is new no more. Such has been the experience of us all and such is the experience of our friend and '"fellow workman," Mr. J. Frank Kaiser, whose heme has been invaded by the cruel presence of death, and robbed the home circle of one of its priceless jewels. Miss Linda Cnolula Kai.-er was born October 0, 1872, and died June "2, 1808. In early life she gave every evidence of a brilliant and useful career. To ber life was a beautiful lit Id iu which there was something j for each band to do, some work for each one to perforin, and with this j idea firmly impressed upon her, she diligently set about to prepare herself for the conscientious discharge of those duties which fell in her way in tb o journey of life. Eich shining moment was improved and each golden opportunity was seized aid itlized in furtherance of this object. After attending the schools about herchiidbood home, she entered Gaston College at Dallas, X. C-, from which she would have giaduaicd this month. But fate had decreed otherwise and with her the lamp of life was burning low and the slender threads which kuitted soul and body together were rive 11 assunder and the pure unsullied soul of the sweet young woman was relieved from its earthly tabernacle and winged its everlasting flight to that mansion not made with hands eternal in the heavens. Just five weeks before she would have left the doors of her aluia mater fitted to grapple with the stern realities of life, she was stricken with that dread disease, typhoid fever, but through the lingering illness which followed she bore her suffering with Christian fortitude and patience and the end found her not unprepared to boldly enter the dark valley of the shadow cf death for the loving and gentle Shepherd led the way crying 4,f-.;l!ow me." Her remains were interred at St. David's, near the home of her parents, in the presence cf numerous relatives and friends who had gathered to pay the last sad tokens of respect to the memory of the departed loved one.
