The appointment of General
Matthew G. Butler, of this State,
Major General of volunteers by President
McKinley, meets the hearty
approval of all cur people irrespective
of party affiliations. The appointment
was certainly a master
6troke of diplomacy and its immediate
confirmation, without having had to
take the usual course, attests to the
great popularity of the General in
official circles at Washington, as well
as to a proper recognition of his well
earned reputation as a brave and
gallant soldier, and an able and
courageous General. Magnetic in
personelle and inspiring in the field,
the soldiers under his command will
fight as hard and as successful as
they did when they made the name
of Butler glorious and wreathed his
brow with the laurel crown.
The proposed issue of bonds for
war purposes is to be, in the extreme
sense, a "popular loan," as the
bonds are to be in sums of fifty dollars
and multiples of fifty, and all
subscriptions of $1,000 or less be
honored in full, any necessary reduc

Election for Pastor.
By resolution passed by the Juii:t
Council of the St. Stephen's charge,
tbere will be an election held on the
second Sunday of June, 12th next,
at 11 o'clock, a. m , to elect a pastor
for this charge.
The Secretaries of the various
churches of this charge will keep a
record of the votes cast, and repoit
to the joint council.
The Joint Council will meet at
Providence church on Wednesday
following, at 3 o'clock, p. m., to tabulate
the vote and extend the call to
the pastor elect.
