C., who was wanted to answer to the charge of stealing a horse belonging to the Rev. T. J. White, who resides near Ljkesville. Blanton, who, was at one t'me supervisor of the Chailotte, Columbia and Augusta Railroad died last Thursday from heart disease. St. Stephen's Church Barned. Yesterday between 12:30 and 1 o'clock, flames and smoke were seen issueing from the belfrey of St. Stephen's Lutheran church and in almost an iucreditable short tin.e the entire building was wrapped in names. aue ungiu oi iuc uic ip uj-h. of those impenetrable mysteries that will never be solved. The opinion of those who first arrived at the scene of conflagration is that the fire started in front of the church somewhere in the neighborhood of the stairs leading to the Masonic hall in the upper story of the building. The Masons met last Saturday but had no fire. The Lutheians had services both Sunday morning and night at both of which they hud fire but the stove was located iu the rear of the building and if the fire started where it is said it did the fire could not possibly have originated from the stove. The building was erected in 1K70 on the site of the former building which was burned by Sherman's bummers in ISGo. It was erected jointly by the members of St. Stephen's and Lexington Lodge Xo. loA. The loss was complete and there was insurance upon nothing. The Masons lost in furniture and paraphernalia about s-200. It is but proper to say that the Sunday school lost everything including a valuable library. Grand old St. Stephen's is laid in ashes aud no more will the Gospel of reconciliation be preached within its sacred walls. We trust, however, a better and more modern building will shortly be erected where this congregation can worship their God under their own vine and fig tree.
