With the duties of a large country

have it fresh in mind to teach the
young beginner bow to succeed; domestic
affairs to look aftet: religious
obligations and spitituul affairs to
look after, and last but not least,
lookiug forwaid to the near future
when the happy event will take place,
you can very readily see why the pen
of Billy has not given you the news.
Everything at present is quiet and
calm. We hear much talk of "hard
times," but I think we all should be
glad and thank God that it is as well
with us as it is.
The church at Gaston received a
most eloquent sermon on list Sunday
fioui pastor Kemtick. He preached

It was a thoughtful and masteily
effort by this eminent divine. The
church has extended a cull to T. 1\
Rivers for the next year.
The Sunday school is still in progress
and will celebrate Christ eve
with a tree for the little oues. An
enjoyable time is anticipated.
The school continues t; prosper
under the efficient management of
Prof. Henry Jacob Raw), but will
soon close for lack of funds.
Business is somewhat dull, owing
to the present low piices of farm
products.
The Sharpc Hill school house^
about four miles west from Gaston,
was destroyed by fire 011 Tuesday
night, November 3(Hh. Mr. Henry
V. Rish is in charge of this school.
Our efficient and experienced Dr.
Brooker is still ou the go, here of
late, treating cases of pueumonia,
erysipelas, etc. It is always pleasant
to be in the home of this warm
hearted Doctor, and his devoted
cc in pan ion.
Dr. Hildebrand, au able and
efficient physician who was j-trieken
with a severe stroke of paralysis in
the early summer, is still suffering
from that dreadful malady.
Our whole souled Capt. Wanna
maker still has cotton King around,
as well as Dr. Brooker, waiting for
better prices. We hope they will
realize them.
The Oak (trove school is still under
the supervision of that experienced
and tfficient tutor, W. 1>.
Fallaw. With the reduction of onethird
of the school funds the public
term has expired but the trustees
and patrons stiil supports the school
handsomely with private subscription.
With a little united effort this can be
made a first class school in every
particular. There seems to be a
general satisfaction prevailing at
present and the present instructor
hopes to be able to continue to give
satisfaction.
Mr. Editor ere you receive another
communication from the pen of Billy
there will likely be some changes
brought about. Changes in State
and National legislation; changes in
the old year going out and the new
coming in; changes iu some planing
for the year "US and changes in regards
to the matiimoniul world.
During the near future many will
