WEDNESDAY. DECEMiiEK I. Ih07.
THE EL I TOE ON HIS HOUNDS.
Last week we resumed our chase
after the Almighty Dollar, the love
of which the good Book says is the
root of all evil, and having a superabundance
of the milk of human
kindness, we desired to destroy the
evil in the lives of our delinquent
subscribers by removing the root
from their pockets into those of our
own, that they might do themselves
no harm.
We know that there is a great
hue and cry all over this broad land
of ours against the lich and the
possessor of a dollar is under the
suspicion of many as being a millionaire
and a bloated plutocrat, not
withstanding tbis we arc willing to
own a dollar now and then for we
find that money comes in mighty
handy in pacing off debts, feeding
and clothing our loved ones, and
keeping the wheels of the press of
the Dispatch turning. We therefore
naturally have a hungry feeling
when we tee a man who owes us for
subscription and visions of jicbes
crowd our thoughts when we hear
the chink of the coin or the rustle of
the bill: but we are greviously disappointed
when he fails to walk into
the Captuiu's office aDd balance his
account. But such is life, made up
of sunshine and shadow, yet some
times it seems to us that the shad
ows of the dollar falls oftener on the
wrong side for us than on the right.
Monday week we boarded the
?aily tiaiu for Lcwiedale, where the
County Treasurer was to meet the
tax payeis and arrived there in time
to lean upon the staff of life at the
sumptuous table of Senator D. J.
Griffith. The Ciptaiu wears his
Senatorial toga with grace and dignity
worthy of a Ceasar or a Cicero.
We found him to be the same old
Captain as in the days of yore, when
* * 1 - - l i :i..
the thought or relate lay nor utauij
upon bis mind?Liud-hearted, jovial
and thoughtful of the coiufoit and
pleasure of those unfortunate wayfarers
whose good fortune it is to be
thrown upon his unbounded bospi
tality. "When we arrived he was in
the midst of potato diggiug of which
crop he claimed not as good as usual
Crptain oversees his farm work himself
and as a consequence he is doing
well, notwithstanding 5 cents cotton.
Lewiedule was very quiet considering
that this should be the busy
season of the year. But few tax
payers put in an appearance aud the
collections of the Treasurer were very
small, yet the obliging "NYingard
grumbled not, knowing that be had
performed his duty if the people
failed in theirs.
There are but two stores at this
place. Donley Sease keep a large
and well selected stock of general
merchandise and enjoy a fair country
trade. The members of this fitm
are both accommodating gentlemen
and thorough young business men.
They have succeed by honest dealings,
honest weights, honest goods
and honest prices, in building up a
lucrative business.
Capt. D. J. Griffiih has numerous
customers and keeps an excellent
assorted stock, embracing everything

in the shop. Low pi ices anil big
values being bis motto, therefore
many substantial people of the surrounding
country go there to do
their trading.
Dr. Lewie A. Griffith serves Uncle
Sam in the capacity of postmaster
and by politness and accommodation,
and close attention to bis duties, he
gives satisfaction to both the department
and the patroDs of the office.
He is ably assisted by Mr. C. C.
Kyer. Dr. Giiffith is the family
physician of many iu the neighborhood
and by bis skill in the practice
of his profession has earned the
reputation of beiug u successful
practitioner and enjoys a large
practice.
Mr. H. S. Morgan is in the employment
of the railroad company as
depot agent, telegraph operator aud
express agent, and discharges his
various duties with promptness and
efficiency which gives satisfaction to
the company and being of an obliging
and accommodating disposition,
he meets the wants of the traveling
public.
The Hall Bros., do a large lumber
business, most of which they ship to
various points. Their lumber is of
the finest ijuality, sawed true and
gives satisfaction to both the pur
chaser and the workmen.
Mr. L. A. Sease presides over a
flourishing school at this place and
both patrons and pupils are well
pleased with him.
Tuesday we were at Leesville.
This beautiful little town with its
broad and regular streets and handsome
residences is holding its own in
the business world, notwithstanding
the widespread depression and the j
gloomy outlook. Many improvements
huve been made in the town j
and new stores and residences have
i aaaMa??a??a?
been erected, while many ol 1 ones
have been greatly improved. There
I aie great possibilites for this progressive
little town, aud the enterprising
citizens aie alive to the necessities
and are pushing the business of the
; town with a vim which is truly com
i mendable. The merchants have
! handsome business houses and cany
. large and well selected stocks which
j they are selling at panic prices.
It is w ith pleasure that we are able
j to chronicle the fact that our friend,
: Dr. Joe F. Mitchell, made a complete
J success with his farming operations
{ this year, and has set an example
woitby to be followed by the rest of
farmers of the counTy. If cotton is
five cents a pound, he is independent,
j having made an abundance of sup
! plies, has hogs fattening to make hi*
own bacon, splendid milch cows,
which supplies his family with milk
1 and butter tl.e rear round, and iletk
*
J horses. He raised the largest and
[ best buDch yam potatoes that we
j have ever.seen any where ami the
| yield was immense. His cotton is
stored away in his store awaiting a
j raise in price. We congratulate Dr.
j Joe on his success, and wish for him
j many more such years.
Datesburg. where we spent Wed
uesday, is another live and progres
sive place. It is the metropolis of
the county and her business well
sustains the well earned reputation
of being the liveliest and busiest
town on the railroad. The merchants
have large lines of pretty
j goods and while business was not as
i brisk as it should have been, yet
! when the general stagnation is conj
sidered, it was as good as could be
expected.
! LikeLeesville, many improvements
! have been made and many handsome
i residences have been buiit. The neoi
1
i nle acuera!lv arc cheerful and well
disposed and are looking forward to
better and more prosperous times
when the clouds roll by. They have
great faith and large expectations for
the future of their town and each
vie with ihe own and all pull together
in the interest and growth of
j Batesburg.
I While at Batesburg we lmd the
j pleasure of meeting Prof. 1). W.
! Daniels, Principal of the Batesburg
| Collegiate Iuslitute. We were glad
I to learn that the Institute was
| llouiishing under his efficient mauagcment.
He is a scholarly gentleman
of high literary attainments and
culture and is devoted to his profession,
and the people of Batesburg are
to be congratulated in having him to
I preside over the educational interests
I and training the minds and forming
j the characters of their children.
This trip completed the rounds
| through the county and we are now
1 located at our office where we can
| always be interviewed by delinquent
: subscribers. Come in to see us.

He thought the parol.t should be

his cuiid to school regularly:
also by encouraging the child himself,
by being hind and considerate
in all dealings with him. This will
create in him a love for school and a

him to be studious and punctual.
We think every- teacher who was

and inspired with a greater zeal to
his whole duty in the schoolroom.
