?????? CANCER CURED -AND ALIFE SAVED By the Persistent Use of Ayer's Sarsaparilia "I was troubled for years with a sore on my knee, which several physicians, who treated me, called a cancer, assuring me that nothing could be done to save my life. As a last resort, I was induced to try Ayer's Sarsaparilia, and, after taking a number of bottles, the sore I began to disappear and my general health improve. I persisted in this treatment, until the sore was entirely healed. Since then, I use Ayer's Sarsaparilla occasionally as a tonic and blood-purifier, and, indeed, it seems as though I could not keep house without it."?Mrs. S. A. Fields, Bloom field, la. Senator Tillman, who has been cor.ducting a vigorous Bryan campaign Jr. "Ponr\c-plv?niA. rpiurned to StU'b 1U X Carolina on the 25th inst., to rest awhile. On the 18 inst, he sp< ke at Reading, Pa., and the papers opp s ing have made much of an al e ged howling down to which he was treated there. Concerning this treatraei-t in Reading, the Reading Eagle says: A number of citizens said to the Eagle; "It is a mistake to say that the people on'the fair grounds hoi lored and hooted at Senator Tillui ?n because of his political ideas They went there to see the races. It was . a mistake for Mr. Tillman to have been directed to the grand staud at at that-time. The people there wanted the races to go on. "When the crowd rushed on to the track the lace had to stop, and that is why the crowd Tf trroc iVir/Minrli , A ^i?;PA:lviliV JUiiCU. XV nao iuivu^U i v \?*vw- ? to Senator Tillman. Tie people of Reading and Berks county are just and polite aod courteous to strangers as any other people. Had the Sena tor begun speaking elsewhere on the fair grounds nothing would have been said The small temporary stand erected near the grand s'and was too shaky. Bad a special hour been set apart for the Senator to speak, which would have cot interfered with the races, no doubt the visiting Senator from South Carolina would have a respectful a hearing here as anywhere else in the world." The Eagle makes the following report of Senator Tillmans's visit to Reading: Senator Tillman's silver speech on the fair grounds, Friday afternoon, was listened to by 2,000 people. He arrived at the park, in company with Jesse G. Hawley and John W. Raucb, at 2:45 and, after several introductions, was conducted to the judge's stand on the track. On the stand, besides the above mentioned, were President McGowar, < f t be Agricultural Society; Dr. E. M. Herb, t and others. The race course was crowded and the grand stand packed. Five thousand were in the assemblage. The Serator was presented by Dr. Herbst. Before the multitude was one of the most talked of men in this country and he was given a cordial greeting. Mr. Tillman rolled his one eye around for a moment and then began to speak. His voice was strong, natural and dishiet. He spoke a few words and then puckered up his mnulh. which has been described as ft scrowl but more an intimation of determination and failb in what be expounds. The Senator pitched n'gbt into bis subject. Berore he bad spoken ten words there were many cheers and some jeers, for bis audience was composed of gold and silver dis< iples. He said that McKinley said Open the mills and not the mints. The - Democratic party says Open tie mints to silvtracd factoiies will open The audience rather liked the expression. The Senator sarcastically referred to the invectives which he said the newspapers piled on on him and which have induced people before seeing him that he was a wild man fjom Borneo He was glad that he "1 ad no horns." This was a signal for laughter. Maoy in the crowd were by this time trying to rattle the Senator by asking him questions and becoming personal, but he reat il / ieplied to all. He said: "Look at the fertile farms in Berks and Lancaster counlv. What has caused the products to drop om -half in piici?" Some one in the crowd shouted: "The Den o cratic administration." He replied: "if the Dtmocratic party caused it, why were the Republicans turned d'..wu in 1892 by fourteen hundred votes?" The spectators cheered this >emaik. "Jf the so called Demo cratic parly produc d the devasta t on and full in prices in this count y," he said, "it will bring prosperity back with silver." (Loud cheering ! and here and there hisses.) Senator j n.11 orvnitriH-d President j j IUUUUL1 nuvu Q Cleveland iu scorcLiug terms. He j said that the President was as good j a fy?ld bug as McKinley dared to be j aod tbt.fc Sherman was his most trusted adviser. He declared that j the Democratic party iu power lo j m >re represented the principles of j Jefferson and Jackson than Le pos sesscd those of MoKiuley. "The vjry name of Cleveland is dispised by all true Democrats. He stands today before the Arnei ican people as the onlv Democratic President who I vr is ever repudiated by Lis own party, fie will go down iu history as the failure of this century." These sentiments were applauded and jeered. At this point the Senator poured some hot shot on the Republican paily and a man in the audience shouted: "Ebw about Abe Lincoln?' He replied: "Lincoln was too good a mau for you to take his name in vain." The questioner grew excited and wanted to thrash Ihe Senator, but the latter was unshaken. Then several in the crowd saw the horses and yelled, "We've got enough speech. We want races.'' This crywas taken up by others. The Sen ator started to sp ak. His voice was drowned by yells, He calmly gazed on the audience for a minute, then said: "I don't know what all ibis noise is about." He was again choked off. He waited another minute, then f omraenced: "I came here" , but he was interrupted. He turned around and said to those in the judge's stand, "It's nobody but boys," He made another attempt, and again was stopped by cat calls. "If you fair people want me to get out,*' he said to the fair officials on the stand, "I will; if not, I will stay here until sundown to be heard." Dr Herbst advanced aud said: "Sentor Tillman requests me to ask you who want to bear him speak to raise your hands." Fully 500 shot up their hands. "And you who do not want to listen to hira." Fifty hands were raised. Dr. Herbst continued: "He will speak brifly, and I hope voa will resnect the man, even if he I ^ ? * ? does talk contrary to your opinions."' "Now, fellow-citizens," began the South Carolinian, but it was no use. The same interruption ensued. The Senator was undaunted, but realized that some in the audience would not cease the din. A consultation was held and it was announced that speech making would be resumed within the enclosure of the race track. A procession of 2,000 followed the visitor to a clump of trees about a square from the Judge's stand. Here everything went on smoothly and enthusiastically. Mr. Tillman mounted a deserted refreshment stand, where he spoke and answered questions for one and a j half hours. His audience included | men of both parties. After climbing on his perch he j provoked great cheering by saying: kiT'U, . J > b Ji,l oj fVtA r\omr?. I XUI9 13 (13 Olliu U] buv utu a/vu<v I cratic paity.*' Ilis reception here was pleasing to him and he said: '*1 | appreciate this mark of courtesy.'" He spoke of his treatment on the race track as follows: "I have spoken to many large audiences in Pennsylvania. I have addressed in this State crowds that have packed halls to suffocation and open air meetings numbering 10,000 and was the sub- J j-ct of no discourtesy until I reached Reading. Cut I will not judge the fairness of the city and county to- i ward strangers by this uncivil treatment. It was only a few boys. I am accustomed to howling. Why this was a mere zephyr compared with the riots in South Carolina that the newspapers lay at my door. Cut the newspapers have maligned me. j I like quietness aLtl am a peaceable citizen. But when I speak I talk straight out and I may sometimes tread on somebody's tees. I like to ! get up discussions when I speak, in j order to get at the bottom of the j financial issue." The Senator next ! described the struggle for party ; supremacy since 1SS4 and leferred ; to the disgust of the people for ; Cleveland and his'uotten Democratic !
