LEXINGTON, S. C.,
WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 26. 1896.
The Election.
The returns as yet are very incomplete.
They rather indicate that it
will be neccessary for Evans and
Earle to run a second race, but
Evans' friends claim the boxes
"which have not yet been heard from
will swell his vote sufficiently to give
him a few hundred votes more than
I the combined opposition, it mere
is a second primary, the vote in it
will be much greater than in Tuesday's
paimary, for many thousand
Conservatives will turn out and vote
then who did not do so, because
they did not imagine Earle had a
ghost of a chance of defeating
Evans.
According to the returns Evans
lacks 2,212 of a majority. Full re
turns will increase his vote as he
is expected to get majorities in several
counties from which no figures
have been sent in. But full returns
will also increase Earle's vote. No
one can but guess as to whether or
not a second Senatorial primary will
be needed, it is likely however, that
Evans will be elected.
Ellerbe is elected Governor by
many thousand votes majority.
McSweeney has probably defeated
Cooper for Lieut. Governor.
The returns so far show Bichbourg
and Watts to be doubtful, the friends
of both claim their election.
Mayfield will probably hold his
Latimer appears to have defeated
all bis opponents in tbe Third Congressional
District, Wilson is unquestionably
nominated in the
Fourth, Strait appears victorious in
tbe Fifth and it seems certain Stokes
has won in tbe Seventh.
Bellinger has beaten Simms in tbe
Second Judicial Circuit; Thurmond
appears nominated in the Fifth,
though a second race between him
and Nelson may be necessary; Ansel
has defeated Prince in the Eighth;
and Shumpert and Sease will have it
to run over in the'Seventh.
?
As far as some of the candidates
are concerned, the county canvass is
ended. Perhaps there never has
heen a county primary election held
in this county before in which so
little bitterness was exhibited among
the candidates as there was in this
one. They worked like beavers in
their own behalf, but generally, each
one ran the race on his own merits
and not on the demerits of his opponent.
When the result of the
primary was made known mere was
of course, some disappointrnent
among those who were defeated and
much rejoicing among those who sucj
ceeded in knocking down the plum
which they were after. We trust
that the defeated ones will bear their
P defeat as becomes those who are determined
to bring victory out of defeat,
and that they will be found in
the front ranks, doing valient service
for the cause of pure Democracy.
Just as good, pure and patriotic
men have been defeated as those who
have been elected; but the people
have spoken and by their decision
we cheerfully bow.
The dispensary and other scandals,
with which the names of
several prominent Keformers are
connected, have become a stench in
the nostrils of all honest people regardless
of factional affiliations.
These scandals have been brought to
the attention of the people in such
a way that they can no longer be
laughed off or put aside uncontradicted
in the clearest and most unequivocal
denial and the most unimpeacb*

their falsity. It is clearly the duty
of the next General Assembly to appoint
an investigation committee with
f. power to send for persons and papers
whose duty it will be to sift these
matters to the very bottom. If Mixson
is innocent; if he were not offered
a bribe in the nature of rebates, then
he has nothing to fear but everything
to gain by being completely vidicated.
If Govenor Evans is guiltless of receiving
$12,000 as brides from Rhand in
placing the State bonds and is in no
way connected with the several other
misdoings, with which his name is
connected, then he should be the very
first to demand a thorough and rigid
investigation of all his official acts
both while Senator from Aikin county
and as Govenor of South Carolina.
Hoke Smith, Secretary of the Interior,
having determined to support
Bryan and Sewall, the nominees of
Democratic party for President and
Yice President, tendered his resignation
as such to President Cleveland,
who is a mugwump of the strictest
sect, and it has been accepted. ExGovernor
Frances of Missouri, has
received the appointment. Mr.
Smith deserves many congratulations
; . at his escape from the hands of tie
. . gold bugs.
