The Damage to Property and Loss . of Life Greatest at German? Corner of the Town Demolished? Other Places Suffer Severely. Sherman, Texas, May 15?A most disastrious cyclone struck Sherman at 4:30 o'clock this afternoon, wiping out the entire Western end of the town. The loss of life is appalliDg. The dead are estimated at between thirty and forty. This is a very conjervative estimate. Many more are !atally or seriously injured. At 6 o'clock this evening, twelve >odies are lying in the county court touse, and as many more are scatered about acrosa the desolated Vest end of the city. No accurate statement can as yet e made on the loss of life and rcperty. The work of resuce and ?arcb for the missing goes on. The usiness part of the town is deserted id the greatest excitement prevails, he Western Union office is over)wed with anxious ones sending P messages and inquiring the fate of other towns. Every available wagon, j buggy and horse is in use by searchers and workers on the field of death. ?fc. As time passes, later reports of p greater loss of life and property ar E, rive. Many stories of miraculous fe escapes are told. r The Sherman court house is in | sufficient to hold the dead and wounded. The vacant Moore building on the South square was utilized, at t> o'clock fifteen colored people, dead or dying, being placed there. Express drays, baggage wagons and all kinds of vehicles continue to ; come in with dead bodies. Around . the Moore building the biggest exc'tement prevails, and the greatest difficulty is experienced in getting the names of the victims and accurate reports. The storm struck Sherman without warning on the Southwest corner of the city and cleaned a path one baudred yards wi >e. Houses, trees, fences and everything movable went up before the terrible force of the cyclone. The negro part of the to wn suffered the most sever ly. There are probably thirty negroes killed. Ten bodies have been picked up in Post Oak creek. The flood of rain which attended the storm, was severe. 1 he town is fa mass of mud and floating debris. There is much difficulty in finding the dead and injured. Newton, Texas, May 15 ?Six persons were injured, one of them fatally, by a cyclone which passed near Mound Ridge, a station on the Missouri Pacific twelve miles north of here, this morning. A stretch of country about eight miles in length and a hundred yards in width, was devastated. Samuel Bass, a farmer, was fatally injured and hi9 house demolished. Five others, whose names are un? known, were more or less seriously injured. The storm could be seen from here and took a course from S jwthwest to Northwest. Torrents of raia fell after the cyclone had passed. Outside of the damage done in the narrow strip mentioned, nothing was injured. Help was sent to the scene from Mound Ridge. Dallas, Tex., May 15.?The News's Sherman, Texas, special says it is repor ed there late to-night that 40 people were killed South of town by the cyclone, in addition to the city's death list. ^ i Austin, Tex., May 15.?A cycione struck the 'own of Austin to-day at 2:20 p. m., blowing twelve houses down, killing one man Darned TV. J. Evans of Kelly, Texas, and badly in juring seventeen others. The cyclone also did much damage North of here. Howe, Tex., May 15.?Today's terrible cyclone struck this towD, leaving death and ruin in its wake. The path of the cyclone at this point was a quarter of a mile wide. Ten farm h uses and as many barns were wrecked. Eight persous were killed outright acd many injured. Baik was sfctipped from trees and much stock killed - ? ?? Swansea. To the Editor of the Dispatch. At this writing we cannot dote: mi e whether it is ate or foitu e that has drifted your reporter from the balmy breezes of Arthur's to the eunDy p a us of Swanse. Although surrounded by many strangers, we were more than delighted to find on our arrival, a copy of the Dispatch, which is always highly appreciated and read witb the greatest pleasure. From the notirie y of its name anyone would infer that Swansea is an up to date town. There are several merchantiie establishments here. Among whom are the Messrs. East <fe Bro., who we believe are the oldest and most estsblishea. To buy from them means fair dealing and honest weights. Mr. F. B. Harman can well be counted in the race as a live* energetic business man and is ever ready to offer his services and goods on short notice. Mr. T. L. Martin is also in the ring and has added to his excellent stock and extra counter for the purpose of serving his friends with summer refreshments. When in town call on Tom and carry your best g rl and you will be in better position to settle any misunderstanding. Mr. P. E. Hutto, formerly the principal of the high school of this place, has just recently started into the mercantile busine-s, and judging i from the nice selection of goods he has purchased we predict much sucsess for him. We have noticed the steady growth of the popular rnillinary establishment of Mrs. Langford and assume the liberty of inviting all of the ladies to call and inspect the nice line of goods. Doctors Brooker, Langford and Johnson attend to the health of our community, all of whom are gifted men in their profession and are men of unimpeachable honor. As we leave the town a few miles we are highly impresed with the most attractive piece of raachiney that has ever been in this country. It is an excellent Lidell and Thompson outfit, owned and controlled by Capt. C. S. Roof, formerly of Authers, S. C. From this mill alone there is shipped from fifty to sixty thousand feet of I-.ruber per week. Among others that are interested in the mill busin ss are Messrs. Smith, Reeder and Derrick, all of whom do a capital business. "We have found this to be a beautiful country, although the people i have not enjoyed the benefit of a railroad until a few recent years. We feel safe in saying that the country is in its infancy and predict, that it will be more thoroughly developed in the near future. Wishing much success for the Dispatch. J. L. H. Results Tell the Story. A vast mass of direct," unimpeachable testimony proves beyond any possibility of doubt that Hcod's Sarsapariila actually does perfectly and permanently cure diseases caused by impure blood. Its record of cures is unequalled and these cures have often been accomplished after all other preparations had failed. For every quarter in a man's ] ocket there are a dozen uses; and to use etch one in such a way as m r erive the greatest benefit is a question every one must solve for himself, j We believe, however, that no better i use could be made of one of these quarters than to exchange it for a bottle of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy, a medicine that every family should be provided with. ' Hello, Charlie!"' said one, "you are just the fellow I want to see. Come cn out in the country with me, will you? I've got to go out to my grandfather's and if you will go along we can have lots of fun." "I'd like to, first rate," said Charlie, "but I can't, Mother wouldn't want me to stay out of school to go." "She needn't know anything about it. "We can get back by the time school is out," urged Harry. "No," was Charlie's answer; "I should feel so mean if I let her think I had been to school when I hadn't; and she might find it out some time, :oo, and then she'd feel bad about it." "I shouldn't think you'd care so much how she feels and what she wauts," if she isn't willing you should have a little fun once in a while," said Harry, with a sneer. "You don't know my mother, or you wouldn't say that," replied Charlie, indignantly. "She always likes me to have good times, and I'll trust her to let me have my full share of all the fun that's going unless there's some good reason for not having it. I don't believe any other fellow ever [ had so good a mother as I've got, and I love her well enough I to do what ! she wants me to do. I don't care if once in a while it is something I'd rather not do; she knows best, and she would like to have it done, that makes me want to do it." Charlie's feeling toward his mother is much like what Christians feel toward God. They love and trust Him because they know that He is good and wise, and they show their love by obeying Him. Mr. D. P. Davis a prominent liveryman and merchant of Goshen, Va., has this to say on the subject of rheumatism: UI take pleasure in recommending Chamberlain's Pain Balm for rheumatism, as I know from personal experience that it will do all that is claimed for it. A year ago this spring my brother was laid up in bed with inflammatory rheumatism and suffered intensely. The first application of Chamberlain's Pain Balm eased the pain and the use of one bottle completely cured him. For sale by Julian E. Kauffman 28. The trial came off on Friday, i tne 8th. After able arguments for ; the State and defense, and the charge I by Judge EarJ, the jury in about an : hours time returned a verdict of net ! guilty.
