as it began to look as if the evening's

A Mean Trick.
A man who probably hailed from
Buffalo played a powerful mean trick
on a Detroit bridal couple at Niagara
Falls the other evening. They went
to a hotel and registered, had supper
. . and then started out for a night view
of the Mighty Roarer. They had
not gone far when a man called to
\ \ them and said:
\ "Have you just been married?"
""We have," answered the groom.
"Going to stay here a day or two ?"
^-"Yes."
"Having registered at my hotel,
you probably intend to remain there ?"
"Yes, sir."
"Well, I want to say a word to
you. I don't want any duck-deary
nonsense around my house. I want
no popsywopsy business on the
veranda. I want no squeezing hands
on the balconies or feeding each other
at the tables."
The groom let his arm fall from
his bride's waist in a slow and painful
manner and the stranger continued:
"The first time you call her peaches
and cream, or she calls you her darling,
out you go."
"Yes, sir."
"She's no sweeter than ten thous
and other girls, and you're no more
of a darling than I am, and I won't
stand lovesick nonsense."'
He walked away with that, and
people at the Fails who knew the
bridal couple were amazed to hear
tbern address each other as Mr. and
Mrs., and to see what precautions
they took to prevent touching hands
or betraying any symptoms of love.
They put in two wretched days, and j
it was only as they were on the point
of leaving that they discovered how
a base villain had duped them.
Care of the Aged.

of it is shattered. But if forked
carefully and intelligently by a person
who understands its condition and
knows its capabilities, it can be kept
in action a much longer time than
would be possible if a careless engineer
controlled it. In these fast
times, however, it is generally not
profitable to husband the resources 1
of an old machine. But this is not
true as regards our old men and
women. It is desirable to hold on
to them as long as possible, and if
we can succeed in prolonging their
lives 5 or 10 years or more, it will
greatly enhance our happiness.?

County Sunday School
Convention for Lexington county.
Communities that may desire to entertain
the convention will please

to elect delegates and make provision
to be represented. The normal work
will be a special feature and each
school is asked to contribute to meet
its expense. Program will be announced

Sumter hes reached eleveo hundred
and is increasing slowly.
A. Mi-P. Hamby, Esq , collector of
the port at Georgetown seized the
steam launch "Little Jack" Friday
for violation of the custom laws.
"Avo, Maris Stella."
Slowly the procession moves on till it
reaches an altar built np against the
ramparts cf St Malo, a mass of rocks,
a boat dashing up against them, the
foot draped with long grasslike seaweed
and on the rock the Virgin standing
with hands outstretched, as if in greeting.
The boat i9 filled with tiny boys,
dressed like the others in white and
bine as sailors, and as the crowd presses
np and the procession passes along slowly
the boys in the boat kneel, and lifting
their hands toward the Virgin they begin
to sing, "Ave, Maris Stella, Dei
Mater Alma!"
The sun shines brilliantly on the
white veils of the girls, on the banners,
the statuettes, on the tall crucifix. It
shines on the upturned faces of the
crowd, on the rocks and the boat, on
the white Virgin and the little children
that kneel and sing to her. And beyond
it shines on the sea, so bine today, so
infinitely calm.
There was n. srhooner came homo I
lately bringing with it eorne men from
a goelette wrecked in a storm off the
Newfoundland Banks. They had been
picked up half dead floating on spars,
and they said that in the storm, themselves
beyond hope, they had seen another
boat sink near them. She had
gohe down with her crew kneeling on
her deck and singing: "Ave, Maris
Stella! Hail, Star of the Sea!" The
name of her was not known. Only she
was lost, she and her crew that sang as
these children were singing now, and
who, perhaps long ago, when they were
little lads, had themselves been chosen
to sing and kneel in the boat dashing
upon the mimic rocks at the feast of
the Rosary. She was lost, she and her
crew. These are the Terreueuvas, or
Newfoundland fishermen, who do not

A Monte Carlo Incident.
A correspondent at Monte Carlo describes
an amusing scene the other day.
An American woman was making a
great noise because the manager declined
to pay her more than ?10, while they
had given a French lady ?12 with which
to return to Paris. "Why, I have spent
thousands cf dollars here," she said,
"while this lady came to Monte Carlo
with about a louis in her pocket, and
has been living upon you ever since. I
want ?40 to take me back to New York,
and I will make a row until I get it''
The Casino people detest a scene in or
about the rooms, and the manager endeavored
to pacify her with an offer of
?10, under the plea that this sum would
take her to London, where she could
then communicate with her friends. No.
She did not intend to go sponging on
her friends in London. The gambling
tables had taken from her the whole of
the funds which she brought with her
for a tour in Europe. Unfortunately she
had stopped too long at Monte Carlo.
Now the bank must back her again.
And she succeeded in getting her ?40.
