Democrats. Stand Firm.
Senator Watson's Counsel to the
People of the State.
b
s Columbia Register.
I have never written an article for
publication. I feel that it would be
criminal now to remain silent
gk when the very existence of the
Democratic party in South Caro
lina is threatened. I am a Democrat
and I intend to be one to the
end of the chapter. I allied myself
to the Reform party because it was
Democratic. When occasion seemed

for Reform. I shall feel it my duty
to strike with all my might all enemies
of the party whoever they may
be. Let those who do not believe iu
majority rule leave the party and
form such alliances as they choose.
But let all Democrats stand firm. I
shall stick to the party of my fath
[ers, and if she goes down I shall go
with her. Let us all fight for our
rights in the party.
Senator Tillman has made a great
mistake in advising our people to
leave the party. We owe her much
and we must stand by her to the end.
Must we leave the only party that
has helped us in the past if we cannot
control it in every particular to
day? It is of the utmost importance
that our white people stand firmly together.
If Senator Tillman's advifce
is followed there will be a permanent
division of our white people and
ultimately an appeal to the negro
?It is criminal to bring about such a
condition.
Senator Tillman says "our one
overpowering and overmastering issue
in State affairs has been white
supremacy, and this under the conditions
existing before the new Con
stitution was adopted made revolt
against the white majority nothing
less than a crime." And, I say, it is
no less a crime today. He may call
us "cowards and sycophants and
treacherous leaders now masquerading
as Democrats," butVe will fight
for the good old party against all her
enemies?the only party in which
our rights are assured.
The Piedmont Headlight says
truly "the word Democrat" in the
South means more than any'politicaJ
movement. . It means the rule of the
white majority.
In conclusion let me say again to
every true Democrat in* South Carolina,
stand firm. Be true to the
party of your fathers. Fight all her
enemies. R. B. Watson.

Thomas A. Edison has justified
the name that has been applied to
him?ihe "Electrical "Wizard"?for
he has just made a discovery that
will prove of incalculable aid iD
working out the practical uses of the
Rentgen rays.
Sir. Edison got his tubes perfected
some time ago so that he could depend
on them, but he was puzzled by
the limitation of the photographic
plate. lie became convinced that
the fluorescent theory was the CDly
practical one to work on, on account
of the great saving of time, as no
long exposures were necessary, and
no need for the slow process of developing
the plate before tbe result
could be ascertained. He, therefore,
began an exhaustive examination of
chemicals. Of these he has one of
the largest collections in the country.
Each was put to the test of its igni
tion, fusibility and fluorescent quali
ties. More than 1,800 chemicals and
chemical compounds were experimented
with before the one desired
was found. It was a compound
which had been made for Mr. Edison
by his chemists six years ago,
and had been forgotten.
It is well known that the intensity
of the effect of the X rays varies
with the square of the distance, so
that the Compound that would prove
satisfactory at a long distance from
the tube must be of great sensitiveness.
To the great delight of Mr.
Edison this new substance was found
to be six times as sensitive, both as
to distance and intensity, as the
Bariun platina cyanide, which up to
this time, has been used.
I saw Mr. Edison last evening, and
he said the new substance was not
expensive, but was difficult to make.
He had used all he had on hand in
experiments he made on Saturday.
The results attained were surprising.
A box was made with a screen of the
fluorescent compound on one side,
and on the other a peep hole for the
eje. Placing this before the eye of
the observer, it seemed that there
was to limit to the penetrative power
of the X rays. The bones of the hand
were distinctly seen through a two
inch plank, then through four inches,
then six inches, and finally eight
. inches of solid wood.
Mr. Edisun said to me: "I call this
new arrangement the 'fluroscope.' I
don't know whether there is such a
word?if not, I will make it. I can
fix the fluroscope to that you can put
it on like a mask over the face and
then look through any object that is
placed between you and the tube. In
fact, you can move around with it.
The effect is instantaneous and there
is no more waiting for a long exposure,
and then for the development
of the plate, for the plate and plate
holder are done away with entirely,
and the observer looks directly at
the object he wishes to see. Just
think what a gain this will be. A
surgeon can put on one of these
tluroscopes and look right through a
man's hand or arm or leg, or for that
matter, through bis body, and see
what the conditions that he will have
to encounter.

Slow Poison.

"I suppose I have sold millions of

the one part of my business that I

at the rate cigarettes are now being

Yale College Attacked.
| A Methodist Minister Says Its Graduates
Are Infidels.
Baltimore, April 2.?The Rev. A.
E. TVarfield, of Lynchburg, Va.,
j created a stir in the Maryland Methodist
Protestant conference today by
attempting to call the Rev. Dr. F. T.
Tagg to account for an ^editorial attack
upon Yale College, whk.ii was
printed in the Methodist Protestant,
of which Dr. Tagg is editor. The
editorial is as follows:
"YouDg men who go to Yale come
?1 :?

whom nothing is sacred, and they are
not satisfied to think and settle their
faith; they are ready for war, and
they want to carry it into the churches
where they aro pastors and tear
down what they will never live long
enough to rebuild."
The Rev. Mr. Warfield said he was
Yale man and wanted this attack explained,
but the moderator ruled him
out of order and thus cut off what
promised to prove an exciting episode.

OUCiiSUXJ, lUiSS., ApiU ti. AU attempt
was made last eight to wreck
the State capitol. At 10 o'clock
while Secretary of State Power was
engaged in his office at the capitol,
he heard a noice outside. Going to
the window he saw several men digging
at the walls. His appearance j
frightened away the men and an in- |
vestigation showed that two pieces
of stone about two feet square had
been removed from the wall. Had
the work gone on a little longer a
section of the wall about four by
twenty feet would have fallen, thus
wrecking the whole building. Strenuous
efforts were made during the
recent session of the legislature to
provide for a new building, but nothing
was done in the matter, and it is
thought some miscreants took this
means of securing immediate action.
