A WAR ECHO.
Every Honorable Veteran Deserves
His Pension.
And the Lone Limb is not the Only ;
Reason for a Government Reward ;
Either.
(From Journal, Lewistcn, Ik)
Samuel R. Jordan has just given
the Journal an account of bis life,
which in view of his extremely hard
lot for the past few years will be
read with interest.
"I am 4S years old and have always
lived in Xew Poitland. I enlisted
in the army in 1862 as a private
in Company A. 28th, He. Volunteers.
My army experience injured
my health to some extent, although
I worked at blacksmithing some part
of the timp. when suddenly, several
years ago, I' was prostrated with
what able physicians pronounced
Locomotor Ataxia. At first I could
get around somewhat yet the disease
progressed quite rapidly until I had
hardly any feeling in mv legs and
feet, they felt like sticks of wood and
I grew so much worse that I could
not move for three years without
help, as my neighbors and friends
could testify. I employed several
physicians in my vicinity, and, elsewhere,
and they all told me that
medicines would not help me, that
they could do nothing to effect a
cure and that in time I should become
entirely helpless. I became
discouraged. I was a great care to
my wife and friends. Shortly after
I met an old army comrade, Mr. All.
Parlin, a resident of Madison, Maine,
and he incidently mentioned how be
had tried Dr. "Williams' Pink Pills
for a severe case of rheumatism and
a spinal and malarial trouble, that he
had suffered with consequent of his
army life, and had been greatly benefited
by their use. By his earnest
recommendation I was induced to
try the pills. After taking them for
a time I began to feel prickly sensa- |
tions in my legs and a return of
strength so I could move them a
little. After a few weeks I began to
feel a marked improvement in ray
condition. I soon was enabled to
walk around a little with the help of
crutches. After t:king for sometime
I can now walk without crutches
my general health is much improved
and I have regained my old-timed
vigor. I can walk about and enjoy
life once more, for which I feel very
thankful, and this happy result is
due to the use of Dr. Williams' Pink
Pills.*'
Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale
People are not a patent medicine in
the sense that name implies. They i
were first compounded as a prescription
and used as such in general
practice by an eminent physician. So ;
great was their efficacy that it was ;
deemed wise to place them within
the reach of all. They are now manufactured
by the Dr. Williams' Medi- ;
^.ciDe Company, Schenectady, X. Y., |
and are sold in boxes (never in loose
form by the dozen or hundred, and
the public are cautioned against numerous
imitations sold in this shape)
at 50 cents a box, or six boxes for
82.50, and may be had of all druggists
or direct by mail from Dr. Williams'
Medicine Company.
Ths Legislature.
Some of the Important Matters for
Consideration.
Columbia Register.
The meeting of the Legislature is
now only a little more than two
weeks off and as it is to be the most
impoitant session held in many years
public interest in it is on the increase.
The session will undoubtedly be
over thirty days in length. That is j
the very lowest estimate yet made !
while the general impression is that
it will last from two and one-half to
three months. The new constitution
makes it necessary for many impor- ;
tant changes to be made. Probably j
the subject of greatest interest will |
be legislation on the suffrage ques- j
tion. Provisions will have to be I
made for a new registration law. j
Considerable latitude is given the |
Legislature in the matter of details j
and likely there will be much discus- j
sion over them.
Another most important feature j
will be as to education. Provisions
will have to be made for the distribu- '
tion of the dispensary profits among ;
pmmhVs. School districts will
have to be laid out as nearly square j
as practicable and a State board of j
education must be chosc-n.
The Legislature will also have the
election of an extra Supreme Court I
Justice as provided for by the con- |
stnution. Justice Pope's term also j
expires and a successor will be j
chosen. It is likely that he will be '
re elected. So far as known he will j
have no opposition.
During the convertion there was '
. i
some talk about the necessity for j
more Circuit Judges and it is possi- j
ble that that subject will also be dis- j
cussed. There can be established j
county courts according to the new <
constitution, but the provision has a :
string tied to it which will probably
prevent their adoption. Before one
can be trie*1 by such a court the
grand jury must act and it is thought
that the cost of such a procedure
effectively kills any chance county
courts may ever have had.
A general corporation law will also
have to be enacted as the constitution
forbids special legislation on
this line, which heretofore Las con|
sumed so much time.
[
A board of pardons will be estab|
lished. It is left entirely to the disj
cretion of the Legislature who shall
constitution this board, but their
duty is circumscribed to examining
each case and report to ihe Governor
who may act as he pleases about the
matter.
At first the constitution had a provision
establishing a bank inspector
i but this was afterwards modified by
j permitting the Legislature to pro
vide for such examinations. The
subject will be brought up and some
legislation will likely be had in the
premises. These are only some of
the important matters to be discussed
some of which will take many days.
There are, of course, other topics for
! legislative action which members
i may spring at aDy time and which
have not been spoken of publicly.
The officials of the last Legislature
| hold over with the exception of the
Journal Clerk, the position having
been formerly held by Mr. "NY. W.
Price. Candidates for it is numerj
ous, but so far as is known Speaker
| Jones has reached no decision.
J In case the Speaker is elected Su
i preme Court Justice, which a great
I many people expect, Mr. Frank B.
Gary will likely be promoted to the
Speakership. His name is most
prominently mentioned in connection
with it.
Electric Bitters.
This remedy is becoming so well
known and so popular as to need no
special mention. All who have used
Electric Bitters sing the same song of
! praise. A purer medicine does not
j exist and it is guaranteed to do all
[ that is claimed. Electric Bitters
j will cure all diseases of the Liver
| and Kidneys, will remove Pimples,
| Boils, Salt Rheum and other affec|
tions caused by impure blood.?Will
j drive Malaria from the system and
I prevent as well as cure all Malaria
I fevers.?For cure of Headache, Constipation
and Indigestion try Electric

A Span's Eight to Soil Dots:
His STams.
There are a great many curious
things that come to the attention of
the State authorities and some puzzling
questions are often asked of the
officials, and this is especially the
case with the Attorney General's
office. There came the other day a
request for a decision as to whether
a man who had too many initials
could dispose of several of them. The
young man, for he evidently had
been named after the war, had several
Confederate generals' names
given him, and he thought two of
tPAll 1/1 Ka cnfiu.ii.nf fnl" l"!?c
uses. He asked whether it would
be illegal for him to do so, and
whether it would interfere with his
legal rights. Assistant Attorney
o n ^
Townsend took the matter up, and
in a friendly way wrote Lim that so
far as he could find there was no law
against the dropping of some of the
initials. He could not of his own accord
change his surname or his giyen
name. In a word, he thought that
he could drop the "P" from his own
initials if he so wished, but that he
had to keep the names Charles and
Townsend. The young man in question
had three long giyen names and
he wishes to abridge it by leaving
out one of the initials.

Is it "overwork" that has filled this
country with nervous dyspeptics??
that takes the liesh off their bones,
the vitality from their blood, and
makes them feeble, emaciated and
inefficient? Xo. It is bad cooking,
overeating of indigestible stuff, and i
other health destroying habits.
The remedy is an artificially di- i
gested food such as the Shaker Digestive
Cordial. Instead of irritating
the already inflamed stomach
the Cordial gives it a chance to rest
by nourishing the system itself and i
t digesting other food taken with it. j
So flesh and strength return. Is j
not IJbe idea rational.' ine Cordial i
is palatable and relieves immediately. ;
Xo money risked to decide on its i
value. A 10 cent trial bottle does ;
j that.
LAXOL is the best medicine for
children. Doctors recommend it in
place of Castor Oil.
Catarrh in the Head
Is due to impure blood and cannot
be cured with local applications.
Hood's Sarsaparilla has cured hun-1
dreds of cases of catarrh because it
purifies the blood and in this way 1
removes the cause of the disease. It |
also builds up the system and pre- j
vents attacks of pneumonia, diphthe- j
ria and typhoid fever.

^3,/^?T right kind. Dr.
Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery makes
pure, rich blood, and to gain in blood is
nearly always to gain in wholesomeJlcsh up
to the healthy standard.
Every one should have a certain surplus
of flesh to incct the emergencies v.f sickness
; to resist the attack of consumption,
grip, malaria and fevers. Thin blooded
people are always getting sick, and none of
tVir. nrmns of the bodv can eet alone with
out the food they require for work, which is,
fv.rc blood. To gain and to keep strength
and flesh is the secret of health, usefulness
and happiness. With new blood and refreshed
"nerves a confident feeling of returning
health comes also.
Nervous manifestation^, such as sleeplessness,
nervous debility and nervous
prostration are in nine cases out of ten "the
cry of the starved nerves for food." If you
feed the nerves on pure rich blood the
nervous symptoms will cease. It is bad
practice to put the nerves to sleep with socalled
celery mixtures, coca compounds or
malt extracts; what is needed Is a blood
maker. The " Discovery " is composed of
vegetable ingredients which have an especial
effect npon the stomach, liver, and
blood making glands. For the cure of
dyspepsia, indigestion, liver complaint,
weakened vitality, and for puny, pale people,
Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery
cannot be equaled. Thousands have
testified to its merits.

After reading carefully the options
of the European press upon the
President's message, and giving full
weight to the many disagreeaoie
things said cf Great Britain and her
people by their nearest neighbors,
it is impossible to avoid the conclusion
that her position with regard to
the Venezuela difficulty is sustained
by every one of them except Russia.
The great despontism of the North
is silent. She has nothing to lose
by the development of the United
States into the greatest power in the
world. She has no interest or designs
on the continent and is altogether
beyond the operations of the
Monroe Doctrine. She gladly sold
out her Arctic possessions here and
is quite untramineled by our fundamental
principles. Possibly she
might render us such assistance as
was proffered once before in time of
danger by seizing upon a British
American war as opportunity for occupying
Constantinople and threatening
the Suez canal ?New York Commercial.
