Jefferson M. Clough Refuses a
Tempting offer from the Chinese
Government.
His Health was too Poor to Permit
Attention to Business. A Great
Sufferer for Many Years But Has
Now Recovered.
(From the Springfield, ilass., Uuion.)
There isn't a gun manufacturer in
the United States, who does not
_ - -r T- A
know Jeflerson ill. uiougn, uuu v?uj .
Because be has been intimately associated
all his life with the development
of the two best American rifles,
the Remington and Winchester. For
years he was Superintendent of the
E. Remington & Sons' great factory
at Ilion, N. Y. After leaving there
he refused a tempting offer of the
Chinese government to go to China
to superintend their government factories,?and
accepted instead the
superintendency of the Winchester
Arms Co., at New Haven, at a salary
of $7,500 a year.
It was after this long term of active
labor as a business man that he
found himself incapacitated for further
service by the embargo which
rheumatism had laid upon him and
resigned his position more than two
years a go, and returned to Belchertown,
Mass., where he now lives and
owns the Phelps farm, a retired spot
where he has five hundred acres of
land.
Being a man of means he did not
spare the cost and was treated by
leading physicians and by baths at
celebrated springs without receiving
any benefit worth notice. During
the summer of 1893 and the winter
of 1894 Mr. Clough was confined to
his house in Belchertown, being unable
to rise from his bed without assistance,
and suffering continually
with acute pains and with no taste or
desire for food, nor was he able to
obtain sufficient sleep.
Early in the year 1894 Mr. Clough
heard of Dr. "Williams' Pink Pills for
Pale People. He began taking these
pills about the first of March 1S94
and continued to do so until the first
part of September following. The j
first effect noticed was a better ap- j
petite and he began to note more
ability to help himself off the bed
and to better generally. Last August
(1894) he was able to go alone
to his summer residence and farm of
1G3 acres of Grenadier Island, among
the Thousand Islands, in the river
St. Lawrance, where from the highest
land of his farm he commands a
view for 13 miles down the river,
and 60 of the thousand inlands can
be seen.
Instead of being confined to his
bed Mr. Ciough is now and has been
for some time able to be about the
farm to direct the men employed
there and he is thankful for what Dr.
Williams' Pink Pills have done for
him.
These pills are manufactured by
the Dr. Williams' Medicine Company
Schenectady, X. Y., and are sold only
in boxes bearing the firm's trade
mark and wrapper, at 50 cents a box
or six boxes for 82 50, and are never
sold in bulk. They may be had of
all druggists or direct by mail from
Dr. Williams' Medicine Company.

December 12, 1895.
To the Editor of the Dispatch:
If you will allow me space in your
paper I will tell your readers about
eqv trip from Chapin, S. C . to this
city of the Western country.
I left Chapin at 12 in., Dcx ember
4th and arrived here at 7:30 el,
having traveled thirteen hundred and i
seventy miles. I came by way of >
Atlanta, Chattanooga, Memphis, Tine <'
Bluff, Texarkanna, Sherman, Denni- j
son and South McAlester. 1
When I passed through Tennesee <
the mountains were covered with \
snow which made them the more
beautiful. I think the finest country J
I passed through was between Chat- <
tanooga and Memphis, though seme j
of the Texas lands which I passed J
through are very fine, still I did not i
like the general appearances as well i
as I did between Chattanooga and
Memphis. The bridge at 31empLiis
is a grand structure.
This part of the country made no
wheat and oats this year, which are
their main crops, but they made fair
corn and cotton. I have seen some
cotton selling here since my arrival.
I did not ask the price. I find the
people here very social and intelligent.
There are plenty of barrooms
aDd bed men here, but a man does
not have to associate with them if he
does not choose to do so. I see plenty c
of "Big Indians'' here. Saw one (
drunken one yesterday; he was in a ,
splendid humor. Negroes are al- "
most as scarce as hen's teeth. This f
city claims twelve thousand inhabi- tants.
They have electric lights.
Only two railroads come here?-the
A. T. & S. F., and the C., 0. & G, }
the latter being completed only a few
weeks since. There are still some lands
around here that can be homsteaded.
With the best wishes for the old
Lexingion Dispatch, I remain, youis 1

A School Girl's Composition. G
To the Editor of the Dispatch: u
Our country has greatly improved v
during the past year in School Dis- L
trict No. 10. It has furnished three s
r*
schools, two new school houses being
built, one called the Golden Star in a
which Prof. S. S. JLindler is the *
teacher, the other the Red Star in
which Prof. Shealy is the teacher. ^
The Golden Star is to be the finest c
f
school house in the county if finished,
while the Red Star is on the same a
order. The oid school house called "
Gum Spring, in which Miss Estede L
Langford is teacher, is also a very 11
nice school house.
There are also four saw mills in ^
this School District. Mr. Shirey's
being about a quaiter of a mile e
from the Golden Star; while Messrs. c
Amick & Brother is only a half a s
mile from it. Mr. Shealy's is not s
quite a mile from the Red Star. Mr. a
Rawl's is only about two miles from ^
it. E
It also has improved in farming
lands, and I am glad to know that ^
there was more corn raised around 11
here during the past year than in
other years before, and also very
good cotton crops. I hope the people
will continue these improvements.

Ths Eecr-ri of a Year.
iVbat South Carolina Has Raised od
Her Farms?Large Yields and
Good Prices,
'h-* State.
This has been an abundant barest
year in South Carolina and the
armers may be said to have been
lessed. The year was in strange
ontrast with the preceding one, paricularly
as prices have been so much
letter for farm products.
During the year just closed, while
he official figures are not yet at
iand, the estimate by competent
uthority is that the corn crop has
een the largest ever harvested in
his State. The total crop is estimated
at 20,000,000 bushels. The
verage yield per acre has been 15
ushels, against 12? last year. The
lrgest previous corn crop was about
7,000,000 bushels.
It is estimated also that the State
las furnished to the markets of the
ro! hi this year G3S.14S bales of coton,
the aveiage bale being 450
jounds. The acreage in cotton durog
the year just closing is estimated
,t 1,957,000. The prices paid for
he crop are pretty generally known,
t is thought that the average price
ser pound will work out to be almost
! cents for the entire crop.
Besides all this grain crops were
musually fine the past year, and fo
ras the tobacco crop, the lath r
ringing excellent prices. Again the
moke houses of the State have been
illed with sufficient hog and hominy
nd like products, it is said, to feed
he entire State for two years.
It may be added, also that South
) roliua has never had a better fruit
op year than this has been. The
ruit was of an unusually fine quality
ml there was an abundance of it,
(ringing good prices in the northern
aarkets. This is tiue also of tLe
aelon crop.
So takiDg things all in all South
Carolina ends the present year in a
ar better condition than she has
nded any single year for half a do
ade or more. There is every reaon
why the masses of the people
hould be able to pay their taxes
ow and then have an unusually
lappy Christmas, and then begin the
ew year with hopeful faces.
During the past year also South
Carolina has made great progress on
udustrial lines.
I?anassas and Appcmattos.
The Manassas (Ya.) Journal says
hat the public sale of the McLean
state brings to our mind the most
ingular co-incidence we recall in our
eading of history:
The first meeting of the Army of
he Potomac and the Army of Northrn
Virginia took place at Blackburn's
ford, July 18, 1861, and brought on
he first pitched battle of the war.
If in o m nf flinf T^pfmvprrnrd
ook up bis headquarters at the McLean
House, and there McDowell atacked
him with a heavy force of inantry
and artillery. On the 9th of
kpril, 1805, after 1,301 days of alnost
constant fighting, the commanlers
of these two armies, Grant and
hee, met at the McLean House at
Vppomattox and drew up the terms
>f the surrender.
"When Beauregard evacuated Malassas,
Major McLean removed his
amily to Fauquier. As the tide of
he war rolled again around tbem
hey removed for the second time to
juuenburg and there in 1803, the
najor returned one day and told
hem he would move them this time
vhere the sound of the battle "would
3ever reach them more.'' They
ented the brick house at Appomatox,
which has become historic and
oward which all the strategy of the
var converged, and around which it
;o suddenly culminated. And so it
jappened, as Major McLean
requentiv said, that the war began
>n him and ended on him.
